Replacing hushers 700 1989

I'm thinking about replacing my hushers and adjusting shims. I'm not due for another belt or seals so this is all that I would be doing. When pulling the cam does the distubutor or cam gear need to be removed to do this?

May I add. 700 1983

In addition to other advice may I add.
Be sure to measure and calculate your shim sizes for valve clearances before installation of the new hushers. The hushers take a few minutes of running in to compress a bit. After that they do not affect the measured clearances but right after assembly they will be pushing the buckets and shims right up into contact with the cam, it will be almost impossible to slide in a guage and if you do it will be very tight and hard to know the clearance. After the engine runs for a while the clearance will "appear".

You may want to install your new shims, bolt down the cam temporarily, check clearances, then go back and put in the new hushers. I learned this from my own experience when I did the same job on my 88 740 when it was around 200K. Only 2 valves needed shim changes. Hushers were shot.

BTW @ 108K your engine is a baby. You most likely will find your clearances are fine.

May I add. 700 1983

Is it just as effective to check the clearence with the old hushers in before the cam is taken off - avoiding the temporary replacement?

It probably is effective since the old hushers are going to be quite flat.

Yes, you must remove the distributor since it is driven by the cam. The distributor drive gear does not need to be removed unless you are going to replace the shaft seal on the cam. I will add that I would replace the seal.

Just to make sure, which part is the distributor drive gear?

I have the volvo engine manual and the section for cam replacement shows them removing the cam gear on the front of the engine with a special tool but they make no mention of the distributor in their instructions. So do I need to remove both the distributor and cam gear to pull the camshaft?


I had the belt and seals replaced not too long ago. I also replaced the seals and guts on the distibutor as part of some hall effect sensor troubles. If I recall the disributor can come off with the cap and rotor still attached. yes?

I meant to write cam drive gear, not distributor drive gear.

Remove the timing belt and distributor. Remove the five cam bearing caps. The cam will lift straight up, gear, seal, and all.

As I recall, the distributor fits into the end of the cam and so would have to come out. Dick Riess would know. See the FAQ for information.
