Rebuilding a starter is a piece of cake.
First check and see if you can get a new end plate with the bushing in place and just replace that. Replace the brushes and see if a local shop can turn the armature. If you can't find a place to have it turned then use a good grade of standard sandpaper but about 150 grit or finer and just wrap the commentator end with it and turn the armature by hand while holding the armature. If it is working good it is probably OK electricaly. One of the most common things to go wrong with a starter is the end plate bushing gets worn and allows the armature to hit or drag against the side or against the field windings. This causes excessive draw and will bog the starter down , then it quits when it is far enough worn. If you have a bearing in the rear , just see if you can get the bearing and replace that. If Volvo dosen't carry it most bearings will have a number on them and they can be cross referenced at a good bearing supply house. If it's a bushing, you are better off buying a end plate with the bushing in place. I had a boat moter with a Prestolite starter that had a worn bushing and worn brushes, They tried to sell me a replacement Bosch starter for $ 180.00..
I bought the end plate and brushes for a total cost of $ 13.00 including shipping and was on my way. Make sure you lubricate the bushing good with a high temp grease but not so much it will get in on the armature. Do the bendix spring end also.
Good Luck,
Dennis
