something's buzzing 200 1987

My car started making a buzzing noise today.(almost sounds like a pump or something) When trying to locate the source, it seemed like it might be the alternater or this general area. Is this a symptom of an alternater problem or would it probably be somehthing else. I am assuming it is something belt driving because it responds to changes in the rpms.

One way to narrow it down is to use a cheap, homemade "stethoscope".

I just take a pice of tubing, preferrably a clean piece. If not, I do understand. Stick one piece in one ear. The other just sniffs around to find the noise. The closer you get to the noise, the louder it will get.

the only thing i can think that woudl make a buzzing noise rather than a squeling noise is the in tank fuel pump. THis happens when it's going bad. If this is the case you will hear the noise from under the car, in the fuel lines
