clutch return spring on a 1982 GLT 200

Do other people have a clutch return spring on their early 80s 200 models? I had one installed when I bought the car but when I looked closely at my Bentley manual,no spring was shown. And when adjustment is being done to allow for free pedal play, the spring has to be deactivated in order for the adjustment to be made. I decided that the spring had been added on later in the car's life and removed it. Should I have done so?

Our two 81 non-Turbos have clutch return springs.

Is your GLT a turbo? The turbos did not have return springs. The reason is that turbo throwout bearing is supposed to be in constant contact with the pressure plate fingers (no idea what difference it makes). The non turbos that year did have return springs. The turbo cable should have 1 to 3 mm of freeplay when you pull the release arm back. If you have more than that your cable is too tight.
