No warning stall, then no start 200 1983

'83 244DL with an SU and M46.
She's ran with NO trouble (other than running a little rich) for quite some time, then tonight as i was driving home, she stalled at a light, and wouldn't re-start. I drove her all over town all day, then came home, left again, stopped, started, stopped, started, etc.... all night. Then as i pushed the clutch in at the last stop light before my house, she stumbled and stalled, and won't start. Checked fuses and all that stuff, but had no tools or light on me.
She cranks just fine, but won't fire. I'm guessing no fuel? She has 3/4 tank right now.

Any ideas? It wasn't a problem that led up to a no start, just doesn't start........

Could it just be that she's mad that i went to look at a 242 Turbo with her today?..........

Thanks everyone!
P.S. luckily i had my longboard in the trunk, and just skated home.....

No warning stall, then no start- UPDATE 200 1983

So i got my dad to go down there with my local mechanic, and they looked it over at the side of the road. Didn't get it running, but discovered that it is getting spark, but no fuel. So they assumed fuel pump?
Any kind of roadside test i can do verify this?

First see if you're getting spark. Take a spark plug out, hook the plug wire back up to it, and ground the plug by putting it against a metal part on the engine (be careful there's no gas around). If the plug sparks when you crank the engine over you know it's a fuel or injection related problem. If there's no spark, you know it's an ignition problem.

The most common stall and/or no-stall cause, of course, is the fuel pump relay. When was the last time you resoldered it?

Go to the top of the page and select the 700/900 FAQ from the FEATURES menu. It has a good diagnostic sequence for stall/no-start conditions. Print it out, run the sequence on your car, and post a new question with more specific information if the FAQ list recommendations don't solve your problem.

Didn't have a chance to do the spark plug trick.
It was about 11:30 or so, and had no tools.
Then this morning i was in a rush to get to work, so no time either.
I'll do that tonight though and get back to everyone.

A note to all: Carry a spare spark plug with you. It doesn't have to be new eg. one from your last tune-up. That way you just have to pull an ign wire and connect it to the spare to check for spark.

"She cranks just fine, but won't fire."
Is she cranking too fine? Ie. Engine spins too easily? If so, may be timing belt.

If your belt is oily and you engine brake, you may strip the teeth off the timing belt.

To check you can pop the distributor cap off and watch the rotor as you turn the ign. key. If rotor doesn't move then it's the timing belt (don't be fooled by spinning fan). Can also remove oil cap, note position of cam, turn ign key, see if cam has changed positions (timing belt also drives cam).

Yes.

She cranks normally, it's not the timing belt.
I guess there's just no cure for a broken heart..........

1) fuel
2) coil lead
3) fuel pump relay - under dash near fuse box

check these first. then get back to me

OK
1) By fuel i assume you mean it has some? I know it does, i put gas in it about 3 hours before it died, but it ran fine after that until the incident.

2) Coil lead, i checked it this morning, all leads are fine.

3) I haven't resoldered the relay for quite some time, but i can hear what i assume to be the relay click when i turn on the key.

The only problem is at i'm at work 'til 6 today (pacific time), so i can't really do anything else until later today.

Thanks again.
