Trip meter gone south!!! 700

Please help. My ol' reliable 740 trip meter has just stopped working i.e. refuses to acknowledge mileage. Normally this would not be an issue, however this was the only way we knew when to fill the car up with gas as our fuel guage does not work.

My question is twofold:

Firstly our trusted Volvo specialist have infomed us that to fix a faulty guage (it refuses to show full, will only go to halfway) is a time consuming job. Not too interested in spending a major amount of money to do this. Is this job is a large as our mechanic tells us???

Secondly, how hard is it too replace the speedometer trip meter??

Any help appreciated on this one.

P.S. the major tripmeter does not work also (car sounds a bit of a dud, but boy is it reliable and most importantly we love it). Long live the bricks

My trip/odometer also doesn't work. It failed gradually. I bet that it is a bad tooth. Try pushing the trip button a number of times. One of them may get it to work. If it does, then never push it again. Write down the mileage if you want to use it to calculate when you need gas. Another, perhaps fun, option is to get a GPS unit. I think that this will measure total distance travelled, as well as its other many functions.

in all reality if your mechanicly inclined you could probly fix the issue with your gas gauge then the od problem, the most likly problem with your gauge is inside the tank itself, there is an access hole for your gas tank under neith the carpet in the trunk, this give you access to pull the sensor out cant remember the name off hand but theres a ball and such in there that of course moves up and down and send the signal to the gauge they get stuck after awhile and either need to be replaced or cleaned, should try pulling it out and giveing it a cleaning and see how it works after that

What year is your 740? I'll admit I don't really know much about the 700s, but they're similar to the 240s in some ways... This sounds like a broken odometer gear to me, a very common 240 problem. Then again, maybe yours is a later model...?

My '88 745 did the same thing. Both trip and odometer stopped at the same time.
I jiggled the trip reset button several times by pushing it in and letting it pop back out by itself. That 'fixed' it. Sometimes you get lucky.

I hear it's bad to push the reset button when the car is in motion.

Hopefully you'll get lucky too.
