Darn flare nuts made me buy Snap On 200

Was succesfully in removing only about half of the brake line flare nuts with a Craftsman professional flare nut wrench set. Found a used Snap On set on Ebay for twice the price of the Craftsman. Needless to say I went for it. What a difference in weight and head thickness. I like some of the Craftsman stuff but that set went back. IMHO if your going to be working on brake lines and like high quality stuff at least get the snap on 11mm flare nut. I should have taken a picture.

Me too: I gave up quickly on the Craftsman flare wrenches, bought two new Snapons, and succeeded in removing two of four lines. The other two fittings snapped in half at the lines. Time for new brake lines.

A new snap-on will set you back $30, but I suppose the first time you round off a nut, you'll be glad you spent the extra money:

I ended with a 5 piece used set from EBAY for like $60 with shipping.

I had a hard time finding a high quality 11mm flare nut wrench without buying a complete set for more than I wanted to spend because I don't need the other sizes. I ended up buying a 7/16" which is only .004" (four thousandths of an inch) larger than the 11mm. It works great. jp

I clicked here hoping to find the Snap-On price, but I guess e-bay doesn't count. My modified Craftsman rounded one off last week. The vise grip jaws just crumble the brass from there. Finally just snipped the hard line and rubber line, unbolted the bracket and used a hacksaw on the bench vise. Snap-on.com I suppose will have the answer?

craftsman, kd and easco are the same bunch, danaher manufacturing. the heads tend to open up under stress. any other wrench they make is fine, have used them for years. snapon is not the only choice, sk and bonney do just fine with their line wrenches. mac's tend to open up also and i've never used matco's that i remember. and so it goes, chuck.

Thanks for the alternatives. I own a couple small Bonney combination wrenches that seem to stand out from the others after abuse.

After doing a bit of research those SK tools look like a good deal. They're priced between Craftsman and Snap On.. and really at that price I figure they're worth a shot.

I got a S-K metric impact wrench set from someone who sells tools on Ebay. It is a great set and I'm very happy with it. For that 11mm flare nut wrench my vote is for the Snap On.
