Any engine additive that might heal the rear main seal? 200 1992

It's leaking. I'm not set up to pull a transmission, which means $$$ to a shop just to replace a stupid seal.

If anyone has had success with some kind of treatment that conditions the seals without adverse side effects, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.

thanks,

Doug Harvey

Engine oil additives are notorious rip-offs. If you know for certain your rear main seal is bad, the only thing that you can add to you engine to make it stop leaking is a new rear main seal.

Any engine additive that might heal the rear main seal? 200 1992

I had an instance recently where the oil separator box o-ring had hardened and was blowing/leaking oil down the left side of the block, running behind the starter and down to the lowest point on the pan and bellhousing (right rear corner) just below the rear main seal.

Everyone who had an opinion after looking at the oil dripping off the pan and bellhousing said it was the rear main leaking. However the front of the flexplate was dry and so was the inside area, rear of the block below the seal. So I kept looking and finally found the leak at the base of the oil separator black box. It only leaked at speed, not at idle. New o-ring fixed it.

Good luck!

Robert

I can second that. I recently had the same problem - poor seal of breather box to the block. I was getting a whole mess of oil in the spots that suggested a leaky rear main... but in my case, it didn't take too much looking to find the culprit:

New o-ring and new box didn't stop the leak... eventually I fitted a slightly-oversized o-ring and sealed things up with ultra copper RTV. Only have 500 miles on it, but so far, so good...

How about the dipstick tube -- does yours have an o-ring? (mine leaks/no o-ring).

Ya, there should be a tiny little o-ring at the top of the dipstick tube... you'd have a problem w/o it.

Stuff on Ebay named seal lube. 200 1992

I was looking on ebay and I saw some stuff for engine oil leaks called Seal Lube. The customer reviews look pretty good, but I'm going to investigate more before buying.

I ran an Ebay search and didn't find anything for internal engine use... 200 1992

Can you post a link to the item you're referring to?

Thanks,

Doug Harvey

Hi,
We are all in the same boat with the leaky rear main seal so don't feel bad. I'm going to watch your post to see if anyone has come across a chemical that works. I have heard they are making chemicals that are working better, but I'm not sure which one to try and what it might do to the rest of the motor.

Sealants don't work, but try cleaning your flame trap and breather system to eliminate any pressure forcing a leak.

I checked flame trap and orifice--everything was clean (NMI) 200 1992

Regrets! 200 1992

Unfortunately, you are in the market for a new rear engine seal. When you do this, you can renew the front tranny seal at virtually no incremental cost.
