Cam is Way Off TDC 900

1993 Rex/Regina with a replacement engine from hell.

I have been plagued by a no start condition for sometime now on a new purchase. I have spark and fuel. I tried some starter fluid but before a second spray I felt air pulsing out of the T-body hose. Puzzled, I borrowed a friend’s compression tester. Dry, 0, 0, 0, 0 PSI. Wet on number 1, 0 PSI. OK, shot rings, holes in the pistons, carbon on the exhaust valves. Leak down test is needed.

Pulled the valve cover to triple check TDC. No I already checked the cam mark, pulley mark and the cylinder location. All lined up! For what ever reason I pulled removed the valve cover and I am looking for “perky” per the FAQ. Cam lobes were not where they are supposed to be! I aligned the timing mark and removed plug #1 and removed cam cover from my ’95 to verify the cam lobe location at TDC and find the proper cam lobe orientation.

The photo shows ’93 with the cam location at #1 piston TDC/cam pulley aligned/crank pulley TDC. The cam pulley is not the adjustable type. What is going on?

Check your harmonic balancer. It may be seperated and time for a new one. Check this by removing plug number one and setting TDC with a wooden dowel.

You are just out of time, no harm or big deal on that motor. Just pull timing belt and start all over with all marks just like you would if changing the the belt with the aid of any decent Volvo manual. Remember there are two marks on the belt.

Why don't you time the cam properly, and while you are at it, make sure the indexing pin for the cam gear is intact (as menioned previously).?

Sheared pin on the cam sprocket?

This has got to be a first or one of a few. It has to be a sheared pin. The bolt and the cam pulley is tight which doesn’t mean too much. I needed a sanity/reality check.
Thanks.
