I'm about to purchase and took it for a test run. It ran fine when it ran, but would cut out (3 times in a 12 mile test run). She said the internal and external fuel pumps were replaced recently (I saw docs). ANy ideas what it might be??

Does the OBD give any codes. Check the codes, then disconnect the Batt for ten minutes, recoonect the BATT and take it out for a 15 minute spin, lots of stop an go stuff. Then recheck codes. Could be a multitude of items. Lets start with the simple inexpensive stuff first.

Let us know what ya get.

It could be the ignition control module since it's a 93 model.

This little device is mounted near the battery near the fender. Takes about 10 minutes to change and cost about 75 bucks.

You will need to verify if the ignition drops like a rock when it stalls, if the tach needle drops suddenly then it must be an ignition related problem, otherwise a fuel related issue.

Regards

i'll stick my neck out and gamble that it is likely a fuel pump relay gone bad... do a search with the words "solder" and "foster". should lead to a multitude of results describing how to resolder the FPR.

good luck

Could be 1000 things.
I would look for vacuum leaks, ignition issues (spark plugs, rotor, caps, wires, ect.), poor electrical (wire harness), maybe the fuel pumps are only getting partial electical feeds. who knows man. the list is going to be really long if you dont narrow it down for us a little.

I wish I knew more about it--believe me. The car runs like a champ when moving, but once in awhile it cuts out with no warning at stops.

Thanks for your input--appreciate it.

If the 93 is otherwise a good deal, I wouldn't be too afraid of a stalling problem. It's usually not serious. Once in a while it can be a little frustrating to chase down the cause. You could use the stalling to bargain a really good price, and then use this board as a resource to figure it out. Best case free scenario is you'll just have to resolder a fuel pump relay or maybe dress up some electrical connections. Worst case is maybe a new ECU or ignition module, perhaps an air mass meter. Anyways a worst case scenario might have you paying a couple hundred, but probably not more, if you do the work yourself (I assume you're not foolish enough to buy a 10-year old car if you won't be doing a lot of the work yourself). If you take it in to a garage, you could get milked if the problem is so intermittent that they can't duplicate it in the shop. Then they'll just start replacing things willy-nilly in the hopes of guessing at it, charging you all the while. That happened to me before I discovered the brickboard. It turned out to be a bad ignition control module and the garage took 3 visits before they guessed correctly. But others on the brickboard have had similar stalling problems and it usually ends up being one of a dozen or so fairly common things.

It's probably something pretty basic and inexpensive that will get fixed when you do the "zero mile" maintenance items. If you do get the car, pay attention to the specific symptoms and situations where it stalls - cold/hot, at speed or not, any warning lights, etc. Post the problem with more specifics and somebody on this board will figure it out, or at least help you narrow down your search.

I had a GL that did that for awhile...turned out to be a bad cap and rotor. Once I replaced that, it ran like a champ.
If I were you, I would check all the vacuum hoses (spray some water on the injecters and hoses, if the engine bogs down or changes frequency you have found your problem). If that checks out, look at the cap and rotor, fuel pump relay, and then finally the engine harness.
I have seen some of my volvo's cut out because of bad fuses. I once had one where the fuse looked great, it turned the car on and would idle in place for hours...as soon as you applied any type of load to it, it would cut out and die. I took the fuse out of the #7 and the #5 holder and it litterally turned to dust between my fingers. the metal strap was non-existant, just in place to hold a minimal charge for the pumps to run.
Let us know what ends up happening.

Good luck
Ryan
