Turbo no more 900 1991

I have a blown turbo and i called a few shops to see there charge to rebuild it most have said about 400 and 500 dollars. I would like to know if this price is in the ball park or should i keep calling around. By the way I have a 91 940se with the Garrett water cooled unit. I love this car I just can't live with out the turbo it drives like a Geo. I am also pretty good with car repairs, is it fairly easy to rebuild it this would save a few bucks.

the turbos i've had that have gone bad have left massive amounts of smoke behind you while driving, especially at take off.
i've never heard of one locking up.

How did you determine that your turbo was bad. Are you blowing a lot of smoke,
is your turbo making grinding noises or is it simply just not making any boost?

I took the car to a volvo shop and he said that i was getting alittle boost but it is bad. I took off the hose coming from the air box and tried to move the spinner but it seemed as if it was stuck. Is there any way i can check it more throughly to see if its really blown?

"Blown" usually refers to the oil seals - thus the typical smoke screen that a bad turbo produces in its death throes.

They can seize and it sounds like yours has, at least I know that mine turns freely by hand. Most likely cause of failure is insufficent oil flow due to blockage in the supply or return line, and/or heavy "coke" (burnt up oil deposits)build up pushing the turbine forward on its shaft until it makes contact with the housing - though I think this syndrome is particular to only of of the turbo makes and ought to make a lot of noise. Can't remember if that was Garrett or Mits.

From what I have read, a seized turbo is less likely to be a cheap rebuild, especially if the turbine has been damaged.

It was posted about 3 weeks ago about a place in Texas for 250.00 to 300.00. Don't try to rebuild it yourself. It takes some special tools and requires balancing after it is rebuilt.

That's reasonable if they do the work of removal and installation. Doing it yourself, you can get your turbo rebuilt for $350. See the FAQ.

This is a standard price. Depends upon what they find, the price can go up. IF you can get a good used unit, fine, but that is a crap shoot and I have been badly stung in the past. My recommend: have it rebuilt. I have used Majestic Turbo in Waco, TX and they were quite honest.

Good Luck,

dick

Check the FAQs. I remember some references to shops that will rebuild the turbo or just the 'cartridge' if you want to do it yourself. Didn't sound too difficult if you wanted to try yourself.

Report back if you go this route and let us know how easy it really is.

Dan
