Seat Heater??? 200

I ripped the interior out of the 242 today and found a seat heater in the driver's seat. There is no switch for one. How did these things work? It's the '81 in my sig.

Seat Heater??? 200

Usually the 12V wire comes out beneath the drivers seat near the air duct for the rear passanger. Both my 79 264GL & 79 262C have heated drivers seats and the 262C has a heated passanger seat. None of the seats work because of the thermostat in the heater grid is busted. I plan to take it out and replace it with some I grabbed out of other cars that tested good. If that does not work I will just hot wire it and have it run off a switch/relay like the later model defroster circuit. I would just turn it on and in a short time it would turn itself off. Of course I have to make sure that the relay does not allow the heater grid to stay on for too long of a time, I want toasty buns not fried rump. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Maybe, maybe not. Some early heaters were just automatic - they turned on and off when their thermostat told them to!

Up to about 85 the 240 seat heaters did not have an on/off switch. They were "automatic" and usually only in the drivers seat. The thermostat in the heater grid was the only control. You could not turn them off, and you could hardly tell they were ever on (they did not get very hot).
The heater in that picture looks pretty messed up. You would have to re-attach the heater wire to the grid, and probably fix a broken connection at the thermostat to get it working again.
