SRS wiring Question 200 1990

On my 90 244 DL there is a brown wire coming out of the drivers seat next to the door side. The SRS light is on is this wiring with the SRS and where does the wire go. My Haynes and Chilton don't show it.

SRS wiring Question 200 1990

A wire comming out of the seat nar the door has nothing to do with the SRS system -that wire most likely has to do with the seat heating element. I have gone through my SRS system on my 1990 244 DL extensively and many on this Board fail to get into such questions -at least when I have asked them! Within the last several months I have developed some knowledge on the subject. And, it took me several months, a little here a little there, to solve the problem. Note: SRS parts, even for our old cars, can be expensive but look on Ebay to find some great deals! I got a $150-$350 power pack and crash sensor for $20... the contact reel cost me nearly $100. This is a good time to relate: if you are working on your steering knuckles... be careful to lock the steering wheel. A fairly simple $60 job wound up costing me much more!

So Grasshopper, the SRS wires are under the carpet on the driver's side. They run through the the kick panel area off the center console. The components & associated wires are usually, to my knowledge, orange in color. There are connectors & wire bundles near the kick panel (again under carpet) and a crash sensor w/ power pack under the driver's seat (below the carpet). This is all wired to the contact reel & air bag on the steering column.

If you have a light on the dash there are several things you can do:
1) Read the FAQ 700/900 on SRS at the top of the web page in "Features". The information contained within is useful to us 240 owners and helped me tremdously. Seriously... READ IT!!!!
2) Follow the instructions to elicit the code(s) on the dash via the SRS spot next to the cigarette lighter. The SRS light will blink in sequence to reveal the dilemma.
3) In the end, you will have to reset the light no matter what.
4) Diagnose your drama carefully.

This is all bearing the you did not get into an accident, undergo an electrical short of some kind, fuck with your steering universals (what happened to me), develop a bad connection due to dirt or age, have a faulty component in the system, etc...

It may or may not be BIG drama... sometimes the fixes are super simple... sometime not. However, post back with any issues after you have READ the FAQ and done some guess work.

Peace, Jon

SRS wiring Question 200 1990

I did read the FAQ's but the Question is still there.
This wire is brown.I have rebuilt seat heaters before.I also was able to unhook the seat heaters wires underneath. This wire is heavier than seat heater wiring. I plan on getting a wiring diagram and going from there.
The car has never been wrecked in the front.I hate it when I don't have a diagram on some part of a car, with the battery out of the car I pulled the carpet back to look at the SRS unit I will get it fixed.
Thanks again for your help

SRS wiring Question 200 1990

You can always move to the pre-90 steering wheel and ditch the SRS
system entirely. 240s from 75 to 89 were quite safe without it,
and it's better to not have it than have an SRS system with problems
(risking an unintended airbag release in the worst case).

Try this link:
http://swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/Electrical-SRS1.html#Electrical:%20Air%20Bag%20SRS

The SRS light was on in my 91 when I bought it, and I used the info in that link to clean the connector and reset the light.

When you understand the force behind an airbag, that slight little "click" the system makes when the light resets is mighty unnerving.

You really need the Volvo OEM wiring diagram book: Chiltons and Haynes are completely worthless. Get it from Volvo Tech Information.
