Major Rust 1986 240DL Wagon

My 1986 240DL wagon, 220000 miles, manual transmission, has some serious rust. The rockers have disintegrated and the floor pan has BIG holes, however the wheel wells look OK. Has anyone had both rockers and floor pan replaced at the same time? How much did it cost? Essentially I got this wagon for free and everything else works properly except the OD and the interior is clean.

Around here, shops get about $400 for a floor repair, maybe $500 for rocker repair. Doing both together would save you quite a bit I think, but still if it all needs to be done... $750?

I guess the question is, can you get a better car for that much money? I always check and compare prices at www.bargainnews.com, and find some interesting vehicles that way. There sure are some deals out there, and there are other people who think that their car is worth $2500 because they just had $2500 worth of work done to it...

I guess it depends on how attached to the car you are. The job isn't exactly cheap but it keeps a brick on the road, which is priceless! If the car has no other issues, I'd consider doing it. I'm about to have rockers done on my 87 244 actually because otehrwise the car is worth it, and I've invested a lot of time and parts in it.

You just have to make a decision about how much value the car holds. Sure it'll be worth more with all that fixed. And the estimate may be a lot less if you deliver it to the shop all stripped out- no interior besides a driver's seat, no carpet, padding, plastic, etc. saves a ton of money on labor. Also makes for a better estimate on the part of the shop. That work ought to represent a couple hundred dollars worth of the job.
Good luck!
