transmission cooler? 140-160

As any of you who read my most recent post here know, my automatic '72 142E has a broken radiator. I know a person here in Tacoma who claims to have a transmission cooler from an early 140 automatic, he has actually used this little radiator to cool his transmission and it seems to be in good working order. I was wondering if such a thing was ever really made for the 140. If it is true I know of several manual radiators and thus could have my freakin car back! I am really sick of driving borrowed cars, bumming rides, riding the bus, and walking around. Thanx.

Interesting... If you can get the lines to reach, and have the correct fittings, I'd say yea... go for it. I can't say for sure though. I would think having a separate transmission cooler would be better in that it would increase the water capacity for the engine, and of course, manual radiators are easier to find...

Does the manual have a seperate radiator for the gearbox? I don't know, all my Volvos are automatics. My 144 automatic has only 1 radiator, which is a combined water and transmission oil cooler. The oil connections are on the right hand side of the radiator. It should be fine for a manual, except that I do not think a manual has an oil pump in it. I suppose the manual cooler is close to the gearbox so that the oil gets cooled on convection. But I may be completely wrong on this. Auto coolers need to be very effective to prevent burning the oil, so I would think it will work if you sort out pumping the oil through it.

That was not my question, my question was did the early automatic 140's like a 1966 or 1967 have seperate transmission coolers? I know a person near by who parted out a 1966 (i think that is the correct year) 144 automatic and along with that out came a transmission cooler.

My 67 144 had a BW35 that was "air cooled", no external cooler. there are fittings that could be attached to a cooler, but they only had a short bypass tube. I think the 122s with AT also had no external cooler.

yeah... 140-160

I was just referring to Niel's post. As to an early 140 auto tranny cooler that's seperate, i have no idea. I do know for a fact that a 71 auto is cooled by the radiator. Whatever that tells you, which is nothing, sorry i couldn't have been more help. In any case, i'd go and give it a whirl. Couldn't hurt, there are people out there that use oil coolers from any random car in the junkyard that came with one, so this shouldn't pose a problem. Peace and good luck,

Even if not you could certainly take some fittings and 25 feet of copper
tubing and make a coil to put in front of the radiator that would probably
work OK.
