M47 - Pig Problem Update 200

Thanks to those of you who answered yesterday.
My car is a 1990 245 Wago with 184,000 miles.

After a little more research and insight I believe the bearings went out on the Countershaft, causing the rear of the case to break. I can get this problem fixed (if that's what it is) for about $600-$800 all parts & labor included. (This comes with a 90 day warranty-if that is all that is wrong)

IF, I choose to replace the tranny, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, clutch cable, have te flywheel resurfaced and have the driveshaft balanced it will be about $3000.00 (This comes with a 24 month warranty)

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Todd :-)

M47 - Pig Problem Update -buy a used tranny from a scrap yard. 200

The local U-Wrench-It yard near my house charges $35 for a RWD manual tranny, and that's with a 30 day money-back unconditional warranty. However, the turnover rate is high and a car usually doesn't sit in the yard longer than 3-6 weeks before being crushed.

I was tempted to pull an M46 off an '85 240 Turbo last fall, just in case I needed it someday, but the car was crushed an hour before I returned to pull the parts I was after. There are a few other yards in the area that I'm sure have this transmission in stock, and I can't imagine any of them charging more than $100.

Save yourself some serious cash: Buy a used one, install it in your driveway, run some Synthetic fluid in it for 1,000 miles, change it again with Synthetic, and then follow the regular service schedule.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

You should be able to find a used M47 and take care of those other problems for much, much less than the prices you listed.

Good luck!

Sounds like it is time for a trip to the salvage (er, ah PARTS RECYCLERS')
yard. Either price quoted is a lot more than I'd be willing to pay!

The “pickapart” yards are having a half off sale Friday through Sunday. The picknpull branded yards are discounting a few small things (bucket seats $14/ea) through the 12th.
