Rear shock help needed --wheels are off, the brick is down. 700

I need some help from cyberspace.

I just removed my OE volvo rear shocks after 135K.

I put one of the replacement Bilstein TCs on and started on the second. At the bottom of the second box were 4 rubber spacers. Two for the top and two for the bottom.

ARE THESE NECESSARY?

I put them on the second shock with plans to go back and install them on the first, but since they weren't on the original shock I'm confused.

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Well, here is what I've found out.

When I removed my old shocks they came out easily. The passanger side no longer functions properly, so I'm really looking forward to an improved ride.

Anyway, I didn't have the trouble that others have reported about a tight fit. I shouldn't have to grind anything. The shock I installed first (without the spacers) is centered and fit very easily. The spacers on the other caused a little bind at the top. I was able to squeeze them in by raising up the axle on that side and applying a little elbow grease. Once lined up, it too was easy to install the top bolt.

I think tonight I will take out the first one and install the spacers. I can't see where they would hurt, and they keep everything lined up nicely.

The shock ears can compress because of mounting bolt tension. Usually you can muscle the shock in place, but grinding the bushing down slightly is OK in bad cases. The bottom mount can be bent back. Use all four rubber spacers to prevent vibration and banging.

I just replaced mine. They were both on mine my orginal. Had the same rubber spacers. Since they were original, I went ahead and put them on the new ones.

I'm in the same boat as you, kind of.

I was going to install the same shocks on my wagon this weekend, but the top of the shock was a bit too wide to fit in the top mounting point. I wasn't prepared at that moment to grind down the shock 'ears', or widen the mounting point, but I'll do one of those & have another go next weekend.

I was planning to use the rubber bushings, maybe lubricate them with a little dish soap to help fit them in. I'm curious to see what other people say...

The FAQs suggest the widening of the opening, either for top or bottom.
