Please help 94 940 wont start (update) 900 1994

Hey guys,

I hope all is well with you all. Well guys I just don't know what is wrong with my 940. Once again when leaving my office this evening my 940 will crank but not start. As you may know, I replaced the fuel pressure relay, rpm sensor, and supression relay about a month ago when the original no start condition became known. The rpm sensor seemed to be the trick, the car would start and run fine. I had a couple of scares on the freeway when my car would stall when slowing down from speeds of about 60 to a 15-20mph cruise. I haven't stalled in about 2-3weeks since I've been keeping at least a half to a full tank of gas in the car.

This evening I couldn't get the car started at all. I cranked and it seemed to catch at point but promptly died. I'm having AAA tow the car home tomorrow and will check for spark and fuel. I can feel the fuel pump relay clicking, and hear the fuel pump humming under the drivers seat. As you can see I've replaced all the "hot start" items but my car is having difficulty after sitting all day in a parking garage. Any suggestions?

Thank for the info

Michael

My '94 940 did something similar at about 160k miles with Bocsh ignition. All fuel system components were okay, so I replaced the RPM sensor and power stage. Once in a great while, it would fire for a second, then quit. I finally had it towed to an independant shop. Turned out to be a bad ground at the ECU. Apparently caused by a full ABS stop, in my case. I believe this is a last case scenario, but if all else fails, you may want to check this.

Check this hypothesis: if the car does NOT stall when the tank is >1/2 full, let it go down to 1/4 full. If it begins stalling, then your in-tank fuel pump or pickup tube is faulty. If the latter, no gas gets into the lines.

You need to verify that you have spark, and that it's a strong, blue white spark.
If it's not, you might have a bad coil, or if it's a Bosch ignition, a bad power stage. Bosch coils look like a cylinder (usually black, sometimes silver or blue). The other ignition used in some 89-up cars is the Regina ignition- the coil looks like an aluminum cube with fins. The Regina system doesn't have a power stage, so you'd have to replace the whole coil if it's faulty.

Try to see if the spark is constant and strong as you crank the engine.
I'd place the coil wire over on the fender, near to but not touching metal, and have someone crank it over while you observe the spark.

I assume that you DO have spark, but you need to make sure. At least the primary side is working- without the RPM sensor the fuel pumps wouldn't run. Have you inspected spark plugs and the distributor cap? Check those for condition and replace if not in great shape.

Good luck!
