Tape for Windows -- Volvo too $$ 200 1989

Volvo wants approximately $270 for a new set of tape that goes below the driver and passenger sides windows along with the rear quarter windows. ($135 per side).

Does anyone know of an alternate source for this at a cheaper price OR has anyone replaced these himself, if so what kind/brand of tape adhesive did you use and how did it turn out?

Per a BB recommendation, I used black shoe polish - the solid type with a rag. Quick, easy and super cheap!

Did this 6 months ago and still looks good.

What about all those companies that are making vinyl graphics for cars now. You've seen them on car wraps for advertising, or on a lot of the import tuner cars. I'm sure that they could create a template from the existing tape on the vehicle and reproduce it.

Heck..you could probable make a nice penny selling those on here.

I recall a previous thread on this same subject with a recommendation to use "sign vinyl". This material comes in rolls of various widths. Find a supplier for the sign industry in your area and they should be able to provide any length and width.

I have a friend that uses this stuff on model air planes. He says the way to lay it on and position correctly, is to first spray the surface with Windex. This allows the vinyl to be slid a little to get proper positoning. It apparently dries and does not affect the adhesion.

Good luck

Dan

Auto pin stripe guy should be able to get it. I have a couple of rolls but no manufacturere of product info is printed on it anywhere. We got it from a pin striper. It is a close match and not too hard to apply.

Have you ruled out painting the area with a satin black finish??

If you are referring to the black trim that extends from the window onto the fender about an inch...minw was peeling and looked bad on my driver's rear of my 88 245, so i trimmed away the loose stuff, cleaned it with alcohol (just dampened a paper towel and wiped it down), let it dry a couple of minutes, then carefully taped that whole area, and applied black silicone seal liberally, smearing it nice and smooth with a wet finger (only about as thick as the original), and wiped off the excess with the same finger, which I kept wiping off on a towel. Pulled the tape carefully and let it cure. That was a year ago, and it still looks great. The extra shiny-ness of the silicone dulls down in a few days. Total cost probably $2.00 worth of materials, max., 20 minutes time, and does not look cheap or rigged.

Silicone contains acid and eats thru paint. Look for rust soon.

3M makes automotive tape in a variety of widths, look for it at Auto Paint/Body shop supply stores - the ones that sell car paint/bodywork supplies..it is reasonable in price.....
