Substitute for nylon fuel injection hose near fuel filter?? 200 1983

Brute indy mechanic used air gun to tighten the fittings to fuel filter on son's 83 245. Had to use one myself to get them off. In the process the nylon hose between the pump and the filter split in half. Tried to use some similar hose from the drain from the fuel filler (under the rear fender) to replace it. Used an industrial hot air gun, but it wouldn't work.
Went to local auto supply store, bought some "Fuel Injection Hose" made in USA by Gates (1/4" ID) plus 2 extra small clamps. The working strength is 100 psi, with 500 psi as bursting strength. I feel this would work. It could be replaced at every filter change for mimimal cost.
Any body else done this? What is the working PSI of the OEM Bosch fuel injection?
Gracias,
el Raidman

The clamps are probably the 'weak' link 200 1983

The hose you used sounds fine, but clamps may be the weak link. I'm a certified Vessel (i.e., recreational boat) Safety Examiner [U.S. Power Squardons, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary] and we always look to see that people are using the right fuel system components (gas is really dangerous around boats because the hull collects gas fumes and makes them ... well, you know!). Anyway, marine clamps are safer because (in addition to corrosion resistance) they have a smooth or filled-in underside that doesn't cut into, and damage, rubber hose. You know the imprints from the clamp band --i.e., the slits from the "threads" of the band -- that you find on hoses? That's where you find the hose breaking down. I always use marine-grade clamps on my car.

Whoa...good tip... I did not know that there was such a thing...poor quality hose clamps are one one of those little things that really iratate me...I was not paying attention a while back and when I got home I saw that the card that the hose clamps were packaged on read "For Household or Automotive use"....So I put them in the kitchen junk drawer...Don't know what I'll use them for...but the junk drawer was THE place for them...we have several boat sales and service places handy...I will be paying them a visit...
Thanks

Most auto stores sell packaged "Fuel Injection" (i.e. smooth) hose clamps in various sizes from 5/16" ID hose on up.

I'm not knocking the "Marine" type, but suspect the FI style clamps are less expensive and readily available "in stores everywhere".

Can't say for sure. They come in a range of sizes. But 1/4" sounds small for FI work to me. My FI hose is 5/16", and a tight fit on Tank Pump, OK on Kjet Main pump barb (to Accum.)

I can't think of a 1/4" application right now. But if they make a FI hose in that size, there must be one. And a suitable clamp too.

Found both the 1/4" hose and the correct clamps at PepBoys this morning.

Substitute for nylon fuel injection hose near fuel filter?? 200 1983

Muchas gracias, Smitty and PorkF:
Will install on Monday. Have to trim the hose to the correct length so as to not stress the filter/pump connection.
I'll tell son to change the hose at next filter change(2 years) just to be safe.
take care,
el Raidman

The normal system pressure is regulated by the FPR at around 38 psi, and the pump can supposedly go to double that pressure - still safely under 100. I think your fix is fine.
