Odometer Repairs 200 1993

Well Folks - I didin't think this would happen but I just bought my daugher (16 on April 22nd) a '93 240. She came unglued when we brought her outside to see it for the first time this evening. It was truly a fun evening seeing my only child react. The 240 came from a local couple in their mid 70's that traded the 240 and a 2000 S60 for a new 2004 S60. They were reducing to 1 car in their old age. I had the opportunity to speak with them and they told me the odometer quit working at 97,318 miles. That was 5 months ago and they only drove it about 500 miles since. They have all the services records to substantiate their claim. The care is truly immaculate, and I only had to give $3,200 for it. The dealer had to sell as true mileage unknown, but who cares with the records that I was provided.

Question is have any of you ever replaced an odometer gear purchased from odometrgears.com? The gear is only 26 bucks and the instructions look relatively simple. Any comments would be welcom. WOOOOt! to RWD Volovs owners and their classics. By the way, this is the car my kid wanted. She loves her mom's Volvo.

Thanks.

Go to this website listed below. This is the link to getting the replacement gear. I purchased the gear from Jeff Caplan, the man that makes the gears, for $29. It took me all of 30 minutes to replace the gear. It is a very simple process and is worth the time and $29 bucks. The instructions are very clear with photographs.

The ododmeter in my daughter's '93 240 now works and I feel a whole lot better that it does.

The odometer gear is pretty easy to replace. Mainly you need a phillips screwdriver. You pull the cluster out after removing all the dash trim and gauge blank-panels. Unplug everything and note where the few single wires connect to the cluster. Most are in connectors that can't be plugged in wrong.

Once the cluster is out the speedo is remvoed from it, and the silver drive motor removed from the side of it. The gear is under there, and you just take out the old one, clean out any little bits and drop in the new one.

"Reverse is the assembly of the above." IS that how it goes? :) Enjoy!

Note that 1993 speedos are unique and slightly different from all other 240 speedos, but the assembly is the same.

This files under "any comments welcome" - I have not done the repair myself. But Eric (on this list, I think) has a step-by-step description with great photos on his web site: http://grove.ufl.edu/~smack118/volvoodometer.htm

Good luck, with odometer and new car!

    Erling.

What a nice dad you are!

I bought a '91 with under 100K 2 summers ago for my 2 boys to 'share'... well, one drove it a lot and the other tended to hit things (like other cars) with it. It's still in the driveway in CT and I hope it migrates out here to live with me so I can bring it back up to snuff cosmetically. It has suspension goodies (IPD bars, braces, new struts, shocks, bushings, 15" alloys and sticky tires) but I'd like to get it cleaned up and "un-wrinkled".

I too bought the speedo gear you did for my '92, but have not taken the time to install it. It does not look like a daunting task.

    Hello,

The odo gear is a walk in the park. How handy that they include all the instructions.

Congrats on the new car, 3200 was a steal even for a TMU car of that ilk. Your daughter has been raised well :-)~

    Happy Bricking!!!
