New Tires for 1992 245 with Virgo Rims - Yokohama Avid Touring? 200 1992

Hi Folks:

I have a 1992 245 with a set of virgo rims. I use these tires and rims approximately 9 months out of the year (Spring through Autumn). The dunlop tires on the virgos are really worn and I need to get a new set of tires. I think the current size is 195/60 R15. I would like to have a decent all around tire and I would like to have as small a spedometer error as possible. From doing a little research I'm leaning towards the Yokohama Avid Touring tire in the 205/65 R15 size. Does this sound like a good fit and will the tire rub on the inside of the fenders/wheel well? Also, where's the best place to purchase these tires? I've never done tire rack so I'm a little intimidated by how that would work.

Thanks for the replies.

i'm running that exact combo right now-205/60/15 yoko avid touring- and i find them very smooth and satisfying. i only have about 800 miles on them, so longevity i can't comment on, but i plan on rotating regularly and keeping the proper pressure always. as far as performance, what do you need with a n/a 240 wagon? for me, it's a great set up.

I have the same car, but with Draco rims. The Yoko "Touring" series is a bit short on overall performance for my needs; I prefer better handling and braking at the expense of a shorter life. Currently running H-rated Bridgestone Potenza RE-950 in 205/60-15; previously used T-rated Yoko Avid T-4 in the same size.

205/60-15 size will retain the load rating of the OEM 185-14 size for the 245. 205/65-15 las a slightly lower load rating (still acceptable, just a tad lower).

I've had good experiences with Tire Rack, but getting tires mounted and balanced for a reasonable price (<$15 a corner) was a challenge in my old area, CT.

HI, no you should be fine with that size tire... when they were available, i swore by Michelin XZX all season, but for some reason, they are no longer available.
as far as where to get them, i'd try "tire warehouse" first, they have just about everything and usually less expencive.
asside from that, i'd just drive around to the area tire places and get the best price ... good luck

Weren't these the OEM radials on the 240's back in the mid-to-late 70's? That might be a good explanation why they're not found anymore.

205/65/15 is the closest bet to the original tire size (185R14 = 25.6", 205/65/15" = 25.5"). I have no rubbing issues front or rear with this size.

Virgo's with Kumho KH11 "Summer-only" tires in 205/65/15.

The Avid Tourings are good comfort tires, but don't expect them to handle as well as a higher performance tire. It's one of the few long-wearing tires that performs decently in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

With Tirerack, you purchase 'em, they send it on over, and they you find a local place (whether through their "recommended installers" list or you find one yourself) to mount etc. Don't rule out checking with the local shops first, though. Others have reported that they matched TireRack on the pricing, making it a cheaper choice since there's no shipping involved.

Nice color! is that a dark grey/slate color? Did it come like that? I love that color on cars, i want to paint mine a similar metallic slate dark grey/silver "color". It would look awesome. Looks good!

I second that motion. The Avid Tourings you don't really need because you don't use them in the winter you said. In that case, i totally agree with the recommendation of the KH11s. Look around, and let us know what you find at your local tire places and what not. Peace,

Actually, Kyle, I'm not suggesting the KH11's - it's just that that's what I have on mine's. For anyplace that will see snow, an all-season tire is a much better choice. Even if you're not using it during winter, you don't want to be caught in an early snowstorm with a tire that cannot bite into the white stuff.
