740 Tranny Seal Leak 700

My 1990 740 GL wagon that has a transmission seal leak. It was diagnosed by a mechanic a while ago when other work was being done. I would like to do the repair myself to save $$. How many seals does it have? How about the cost for the seals and the complexity in replacing them? I have yet to get underneath the car (garage is full) and really look at it but have been adding more AT fluid every week! I have 4 jack stands ect. and I am ready to take this on. Is it a PITA for a DIY?

Thanks!

Just did this on my 87, the job is not that bad (assuming it is leaking at the rear, very common, yes). Read the FAQ, it covers what you need to know. Be armed with a fresh can of spray gasket remover, the gasket between the tailshaft housing and tranny is thick and tough, and it is stuck to the tranny like glue... hardest part of the job.
Total parts cost: $12.00 (FCPG), you need what they call an "extension housing kit", it contains a new gasket, bushing and seal.

Hi: I agree with Erwin? You have a common problem as I do . I replaced just the seal and 2 weeks later it was leaking again. You need to remove the rear trans case and have the old bushing pressed out and a new one pressed in the install your trans seal, then use a new rear trans case seal gasket and reinstall it. FC Grotons or IPD has what you need for that job. It comes as a kit. Dan M. PS. do not forget to refill and check the trans fluid per your Volvo owners manual.

Get ready to get dirty, find out where the leak is before you do anything, if its the front seal your going to have to pull the tranny back from the engine, not a fun job and a very time consuming one while at it, all the other seal's you can get to while it's where its at. once you determind where and what is leaking take a look at the F&Q and you should find close to step by step instruction what where to go next.

Click here to read the section of the FAQ's that talks about the seal and bushing replacement on the output housing of your transmission.

I am assuming that it is this seal that is leaking because it is the most common source. Once the bushing is worn replacing the seal alone only slows the leak down for a short time.
