Gang,

Can I take just the differential gears out of one car and put them into another without any special alignment measures?

From what I have seen, all that needs to be done is just remove the rear cover, unhook the axles and remove the four bolts holding the differential assembly.

Is this possible? It would be a hell of a lot easier than swapping out the
entire rear axle.

Yes you can swap the differential carrier intact with the ring and pinion.

The other guy (sorry I forget your name) says I need to set backlash and all this other stuff...

Let me be more specific.... I don't want to physically remove the ring gear from the differential.... I want to take the differential from one car with ring gear attached and put it in another car.

Can this be done as a drop in or does it require careful installation?

Porkface is correct. If you remove ring gear and carrier it has to be setup in a different housing along with the matching pinion gear. Easier and cheaper to R&R complete axle assembly. Rear gearsets not precisely setup WILL self destruct in a short time.

swapping the axle is a lot easier. the preload on the pinion bearing and carrier bearings has to be reset, very precise work. a dial indicator, some prussian blue and lotsa time. call the local 4x4 shop and ask what they charge to set up a diff, it won't be cheap because it's hard work. good luck, chuck.
