is there a difference between a alternator from a 1988 740 and a 1993 940?

Hi Teamdrake, Yes, one is a big Bosch alternator and the 93 is a small Hitachi alt..

is there any reason that a alt out of a 740 from the latre 80's could not be used with a 93 940?

If it bolts up and works properly I don't see any reason not to use it. I would take it back to Advance Auto so they could check it. They do it for free. I mispoke on the alt it is a nippon denso not a hitachi.
