Fuel pump relay: a puzzle 140-160 1972

I think my fuel pump relay is having issues and may be stuck open -- I have a service manual, but the configuration on mine appears to be different. Mine two relays on the passenger side fender, both of which have been bypassed. (I'm assuming one of these is the fuel pump because when wires were loosed the engine wouldn't turn over.) The 2 replacement relays are Volvo (Bosch), 12V 20/30A, #0332204150. Because my service manual is a patchy copy I can't make out the relevant amperages to verify if these are proper relays -- the reason I suspect they are not is in part because my brother, who works for Volvo and has experience in restoration, checked into this and said the proper relay would be a 12V 30A, #0332019150. I have one of these, but didn't want to switch them out without first doing some research. Any thoughts?

Fuel pump relay: a puzzle 140-160 1972

I just looked at my 73 1800ES (same system). One is a Bosch 10A P/N 0 332 003 021. The other is a Bosch 10A 0 332 003 025, and has a large blue dot on it. The pins appear to be numbered identically. My Haynes manual says that the "Main" relay (that feeds power to the computer) is the one with the blue dot, and the other powers the fuel pump. The differnce is that the main relay (blue dot) has a diode inside that protects the computer in the event you accidentally connect the battery terminals in reverse.

I know the P/N's and amperages I have don't match your's, but take it all for what it's worth.

BTW - if the computer doesn't sense impulses from the trigger points, it will not allow power to the fuel pump relay relay deyond the intitial 1 or 2 second shot it gets when you first turn the ignition on. So power to the fuel pump will only be momentary (at best) if the main relay is bad.

Good luck.
