On Friday I received via UPS two brand new rear replacement Bilstein HDs. For the past year I had been hearing horrible clunking sounds from the driver's side rear even after replacing all bushings. Finally switched sides and the clunks shifted to the right. Swapped in Boge Autos and the clunks completely gone! Contacted Bilstein and had both rears shipped to the factory for testing. I had purchased the full set brand new but apparently one was shot. They replaced both rears with brand new ones no questions asked. I'm pumped to get these babies back in, but a little anoyed that for the past year it was indeed the shock that was bad and not necessarily my bushings. I partly blame myself for not switching the sides earlier but at least the entire front and rear suspension is brand spanking new. So, if you recently purchased HD's and are experiencing clunks that you can't nail...could be the Bilsteins!!
Best,

DaWg,
I hate too hear it. I am glad to hear it. At least Bilsteinn stands behind what they build. Rigerous quality control, or not. They are still the best in my opinion. Love the ride they give and the cool yellow color (LOL) inside the fender makes them handle bumps better. Did'nt you know? I am happy when a consumer gets a little justification... you were right all along.
How is that electric fan bullshit? My buddy thinks you have air lock. I would put a new, and cooler thermostat in the car. You might solve two problems that way even if you think that part is "new"... it is an easy job to do on a 240. I want to know where you hook up the in-line thermo and holder, so post back... bi-o-tch
Peace, Jon

Brotha,
Thanx for the support! Hopefully slap them back in this week or next. As far as the fan BS I haven't figured it out yet (haven't done shit with the thermo probe) but I'll take your advice and get a cooler thermostat and "burp" the system. I'll report back when/if I get an in-line setup and get this crap fixed!!

I knew the rear Bilstein Tourings rattled. FCP Groton replaced mine after some 10 months, with my choice of shocks at no charge. And there have been many posts here on the subject in the past several months.
But you say even the HDs are shoddy now? So much for the boastability value of "running Bilsteins on my brick".

Me too. I bought some from IPD about 6 months ago. As soon as I heard all of the clunking I switched them, and then the clunking switched sides as well. So, I called IPD about it, and they said that the have been getting back a lot of reports about these shocks. They had some people working on solving the issue and they were considering stopping selling the product until the issue was solved.
So, I decided to upgrade to Koni, they sent them out right away. I swapped them out and sent the bilsteins back to them and they gave me a refund. Not to painless, besides the part about me taking off the orgonal shocks, putting on the bilsteins. Then taking off the bilsteins to put them on opposite sides, and then taking them off again and putting on the Koni. But in the end, I am happy, IPD stood by the product they sell and Bilstein stands behind their product.
This is apparently a recent issue. Older models of Bilsteins don't have this problem, so this problem could be solved soon. If you are in the market, you should call IPD and ask them if the problem has been solved yet.

I have been hearing about Bilstein problems lately. I hope they bothered to test the two new replacements that they sent. I will be extremely pissed if the clunks return. Unfortunately did not purchase the set through IPD. On a side note...how are the Koni's?
