**Help** 89 740GL-Engine Seizure - What to do?

Can anybody offer suggestions to the following scenario:

1. Wife drove car to diner and came back no problem.
2. Next morning, car won't start. It cranks but doesn't fire.
3. I don't smell gas so I replace main fuelpump/filter.
4. Car still cranks but doesn't start.
5. I pull plug #1, has gas on it. I notice corrison on end so I clean it and
put it back.
6. I crank engine, get a pop sound. Then a metal on metal grinding sound. Then
starter can't turn engine. That's where I'm at right now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know why it won't start to begin with. Now it looks(sounds) like I broke a rod.
Should I:
1.replace the engine
2.take out the engine and try to fix what broke
3.buy a new car

Thanks,
Bob

Make sure the timing belt didn't just go out on you. It may have broken or stripped the teeth off the belt.

I doubt if you broke a rod.

Maybe you broke the starter. You can pull it and bench test it.

The "pop" I heard after cleaning the plug bothers me. Before that the engine turned fine. Now there is a definate metal-on-metal sound till something catches and prevents the starter from turning.

Well,it doesn't sound good...but...see if you can turn the engine over by hand...just put a socket with a really long extension on the front crank pulley bolt...this will take the starter out of the mix, and any crank sensor or distributor rotor issues also out of the mix. I've had a broken arcing rotor make the engine make all kinds of racket with nothing firing when it should. Scared the hell out of me.
