Still Cuts-Out, Especially on Wife, Need Tips 900 2003

OK, here's what happens, at redlight during take-off, she'll sputter and maybe stall but no power if she doesn't stall. Sometimes she'll cut out while driving down the road under no or light throttle. Never happened under full or near full throttle as best I can tell. I've been thinking the TPS. I went through the procedure for setting up switch, cleaned the throttle, etc. per the Volvo book. Car seemed much better off idle, thought I had it. Drove it myself last night and all day, she ran like a top. Wife hopped in and went 6 blocks and it acted up. Thinking I ought to buy a TPS (or a car) tomorrow.

Put in a new fuel injection relay (cause I had one). The eleven year old one looked fine when I opened it up (it'll be the spare). The flywheel sensor (RPM pick-up is exactly 2 years old, Volvo OEM), the ignition amplifier is also 2 years old (from chasing the last intermittant hassle). And, it's a Regina set-up. Yes I'm studying the FAQ. Also, no codes stored. Thinking flywheel sensor gets swapped out after TPS, because the last one failed without a code. Give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Mike

This is a 93? 940 Regina car? and it only happens at low rpms? and how much fuel is in the tank? and the air intake hose going into the throttle and all the associated vacuum lines have no holes or soft spots?

Chris,

Yeah, its a 93, fuel pump is only 2 to 3 years old, but I'll note level next time it happens. Just looked at hose between MAP and throttle, appeared good, I'll give it a closer look. I checked all vacuum lines at the manifold, but I'll give them a closer look also. Thanks for the tips.

Mike

So you know, I don't think I've replaced more than five or six tp sensors, ever. I wouldn't rush out and purchase one of those. What about the cap and rotor? When were they done? A slow rpm equals a slower turning rotor. Do you run the air? Does she run the air? Could that be the difference between the two of you driving? I saw that you serviced the throttle, but have you recently cleaned the idle air motor? Ask your wife if she can correlate the stall with perhaps the front fan coming on. If the belts are a bit loose, or maybe a crank pulley is a little sad, and the AC is running, and the alternator charge is just barely where it needs to be, and then that front fan comes on,the idle will dip down to nada, and then the car stalls.

You also have a suppression relay...inner fender well, passenger side. I have had the fuel pressure regulator affect a very low idle on a Regina, and cause the very same...spit, sputter, pause on acceleration from a dead stop. I've replaced it with the higher pressure, just for Regina, regulator, that Volvo developed for those cars that just wouldn't idle above 500 with the AC on.

Chris,

Thanks for the tips, she said the AC was on last night. I had not been running the AC. I'll clean the IAC next.

Mike
