Can't get the toe in / alignment right - help! 700

Had all the bushings (not struts) replaced a bit over a week back - decided it was time for an alignment.

Took it to a local shop. He put it up and got it all lined up to specs (toe in was all he could adjust) - and I drive it away with a steering wheel off center to the right by a fair amount.

He put it back on the machine two more times - (there were three specs in the computer for my 740) - same thing. Got my money back - but I am wondering what is up. I sat in the car the last two times and held the steering wheel dead center - same results.

Any ideas?

Well he doesn't know how to do an alignment obviously. First he has to center the wheel, then adjust the tie rods to get both wheels pointed straight ahead with the proper amount of toe-in.

That is what he did, Jim.

Mystery to me why it did the way it did.

Turn both tie rods, equal number of turns (or partial turns) such that it turns the wheels in the direction that your steering wheel is NOW pointing when you are going straight down the road.

In other words, if your steering wheel is now turned to the left when you are going straight down the road, get under the car and adjust both wheels to the left.

Has your REAR axle been knocked out of alignment by an accident?

No. he worked on both sides.

This has me a bit baffled. I used to do this kind of work WAY BACK - and I do not ever recall having this much probelm getting the steering wheel centered. I checked faq's and nothing was mentioned that I could find.

There is an answer - I am sure.

It ain't rocket science; if the wheel's not centered, you adjust BOTH tie rods the same direction(L or R) to correct it.

I know ..it ain't rocket science !

No - no accidents to rear end. Wheel was straight when I went in - the toe was just not right after the front end work (had wear marks on the tires).

Thing is I watched him - even helped him by sitting in the car and holding the wheel - but each time it was off to the right. As I said - I used to do this kind of work - (long ways back) -so I know just enough to make we wonder why ??
