The used bumper that I recently bought for my 444 has one glich. When they chromed it, they neglected to tape off the holes on the overrider bar. So chrome plated out in there and now I have to tap the holes. One attempt was made, and one of the holes was easily tapped because there were still a few threads left. The other one...so sorry chica. So, I drilled out the hole (using an 'R' sized drill bit) and am now attempting Numero 2 attempt at tapping it.
So far, it's looking bleak. Does anybody know how to do this properly?

Never mind. I was able to tap it.
I have been looking at PV 444 and 544 front bumpers. It looks like in general, the older the PV the less likely it is to have a front bumper overrider bar. Can anybody confirm this?
My car is a 1957. The manual I have shows no overrider bar for this year, but there are holes in my front fenders where an overrider bar should go. Then again, I'm pretty sure these fenders came off a 544. Does anybody know if the 57 PV444 should have the overrider bar? Regardless, I'm putting it on there.
So the other question is, where should the overrider bar should mount to the car once it goes inside that hole in the front fender?? And if these fenders did indeed come off a 544 -and my frame is a 444- will it have the proper attachment point to mount the overider bar in there?
BTW, It is like a puzzle putting the bumper back together. I know it all goes together somehow, though, because I bought it all together!!

If this turns out to be a second response, sorry. The 1st time I responded I failed to log into the system which is needed after the maint. that was done.
The overrider bar attaches to the front bolt of the bumper bracket under the front end. You will notice that the hole in the body for the bumper bracket is not vertical to the hole for the overrider so you will need a spacer, piece of pipe, about 3/4" long to slip over the front bolt along with some hefty washers.
As for the puzzle, I am sure you will see how everything fits together. Hint - the bottom of the bumber has a curved lip.
Are your the person living in AZ? I hope you enjoy the heat, yea I know it is a dry heat. :)

Dennis-
Thanks, I don't think I would have ever figured out I need a 3/4 inch spacer there (I knew the thing didn't fit!) The bracket mounting hardware I ordered from Olof doesn't include a bolt that is long enough to put this spacer in there. Swedish Treasures sells a bracket mounting kit that does have a longer bolt...still, it is not that obvious that this is where a gap should go and what to do about it.
Now if I had been paying attention when I dissembled the bumper...
25 years in Mesa/Tempe/Chandler? We could have been neighbors! I know what you mean about the PNW, I just moved back to Tempe from Portland last year (I was there for 1-2 years). The thing I like about this place is that there are good jobs here. But the PNW is so much cooler.
Peace

BTW, I ended up using 1/2 inch spacers (chromed, $2.85 each at Ace Hardware) and no washers. Looks good!
The bumper is mounted to the car at the bumper brackets, however, on either side, only one of the two holes in the 'T' of the bumper bracket lines up with the square hole in the bumper. The other hole in the bumper bracket doesn't line up with anything on my bumper (should it?). Also, I can't figure out how to attach the overrider bar once it goes inside that hole in the fender, what does it attach to? The front bolt holding the bumper bracket on? Or the back bolt? It doesn't really line up with either, but my car has been in a front end accident and the bumper brackets are pretty malaligned.

Absolutely. The arm of each bracket that is on the inside, toward the center, should attach where the center section and outside section of the bumbers come together and the bumper guards attach. The bolt goes through the bracket, both bumper sections and into the rear of the bumper guard.
Then the hole in the outside arm of each bracket should line up with a hole in the bumper and attached with the chrome head bolt.
If the brackets are bent, that is your problem. If the car suffered a front end accident, you might also check the flanges that the brachets attach to under the front end. If they got moved in the accident, that will also cause things to not allign anymore. I had the same problem but was lucky when I found a replacement bumper, it came with good brackets but I had to get the flange pounded back in place and welded.
The overrider bar attaches to the front hole under the front end then to the top of each bumper guard and each end attaches to the bumper.
I hope this helps.

I need new bumper bumper brackets (and possibly the flanges are bent, I will check that as well).
thank you
