Hi everyone,

My '91 745s have the front speakers at the top corners on the dash. There are no speakers in the front doors, just the grills with nothing behind them. Anyway, the right front speaker in my 745T isn't working so my mechanic got me one out of a junker '93 944 NA. I discovered when I removed my speaker that the one out of the '93 is not the same :( I guess they changed them since the 940s had speakers in the front doors. What sucks is that the speakers are "VOLVO" and are built into the speaker grill. Therefore, it looks as though I would have to go to Volvo to get a replacement speaker ($$$). Now, as far as I can tell those speakers were ONLY used in the '91 and '92 740 :( Any suggestions or experiences? Thanks in advance.

Put real speakers behing the door grill - they're 5-1/4". Most likely, the originals were removed when they crapped out. The wiring is prolly still there already, so it should be too hard to mount some new (and much better!) aftermarket in place.

As for the dash speakers ... fidelty wise, they just plain suck. Just forget about 'em.

I don't think that either of my 745s had the front door speakers. When you remove the speaker grills on the front doors there's no cutout in the door skin for the speaker. That doesn't mean the wires aren't there, but I don't remember them being there when I had the door skins off. I know the door speakers would provide better sound, but right now I'm trying to save some money and would like to just replace the one dash speaker. Also, I'd rather not have to move the wires from the dash to the door. If it seems that it's going to be expensive to replace the dash speaker, I guess I'll just relocate them to the door. So your '91 745T has the speakers in the front door?

Wow - strange. Every one I've seen has the cutouts, with '91+ having both the door and the dash speakers. Perhaps it's a US/Canada market thing ...

If it's anything, consider cutting a small piece of fiberboard in the shape of the speaker, mount up a small speaker, and cover with speaker grill fabric. I think a 3-1/2" (GM size) can fit.

Or cut out the old speaker/magnet portion and mount up a new one in place. It's broken already, right?

That is weird. It must be a Canadian vs. US spec. Thanks for the ideas, I'll see what I can do. Maybe I'll just relocate them to the door if I can't find an inexpensive replacement . I would think the sound wouldn't be as good though without the speakers on the dash reflecting off the windshield? Hmmmmmmmm.....That's a good idea about cutting the old one out, maybe I'll look into that more.
