New engine mounts cured my driveline vibration... yes! 200 1986

After changing my tailshaft bushing and center support bearing I didn't get any change in the vibration of my car while driving...

some kind folks here suggested their motor mounts had cured such an issue and now that I've changed those not only is the vibration gone but also the annoying shudder when moving forward from a stop in first gear...

thanks again ...

jack,

1) On the passenger side, did you

(a) remove the oil filter?
(b) swing back the alternator for added clearance?

Or there is no need for either.

2) Transmission mount

Did you change this as well?

I am getting a lot of vibrations in my stick shift and also the "bang" in 1st gear when going forward from a dead stop.

Thanks.

".....1) On the passenger side, did you

the oil filter was already off and that did help a lot
I didn't have to move the alternator
if you're gonna do this job follow the guidelines in the "700/900 faq" for engine mount replacement.

".....2) Transmission mount

my transmission mount had already been changed when I did the tailshaft bushing and the center support bearing... it didn't really do a lot to help the vibration at the time but it did need replaced.

if you are experiencing a klunk as your car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear it could be in need of a transmission fluid flush to significantly lessen the klunk although it might not be eliminated.... mine still has the 1 to 2 klunk but the shudder taking place right as I take off from a stop is gone... it wasn't a bang as much as a shudder.

another qn. you may have to ask yourself is ... "why might my motor mounts be failing?" ... the answer could be excessive oil leaking on them (mine was from the front engine seals which were leaking badly)... you would want to fix the cause of mount deterioration near the same time you replace the mounts so you don't ruin another set of mounts!

good luck!

Have you guys replaced your rear trailing arm bushings? Think I read that bad bushings can cause that "clunk". Another possibility might be a bad univrsal joint in your driveshaft.

I solved a shudder when taking off in first gear by replacing the rubber center bearing support housing.

Hi Daniel,

Where is that rubber which you replaced?
What is involved in replacing it? What do you need to take apart if anything?

I have that shudder as well... would be nice to not have it anymore!

Thanks.

It is in the center of your driveshaft. Take a look under your car, you'll see it. To replace it you will need to drop your driveshaft. Search the archives for more specifics. Also check the 700/900 FAQ, I think there is a description there of the job - same or similar part.

Also check your tranny mount.

Good luck,

Congrats! Which brand of mount did you use, and where did you purchase it? Thanks.

don't remember the brand but I got them from FCP Groton, pretty reasonable.
