AC conversion to R134 question 200 1987

I have completed the conversion using the official Volvo kit which included new evaporator, expansion valve, HP hose, drier. Removed compressor and drained old oil and installed new ester oil. Have vacumed and charged with good results do far, today will try to fine tune the volume of R134 for best results while watching for 2.2 to 2.5 x ambiant temp for high side psi, understand the vacume side should be about 30 to 35 psi @ 1500 or so rpm.

Question: Attached to the new expansion valve is a fine tube terminating in a curly section about 1 inch long. Where does it go? On the old expansion valve it just seemed to be stuffed inside the evap cover. What is it's purpose?

Will post final pressures, vent temp and ambiant for the curious.

hi there just hose clamp the curly section to the u-bend shaped pipe (low side) below the union about 2 or 3 inches.

      AC conversion to R134 question 200 1987

      Thanks for the response.
The tube for the dash thermostatic switch is definitely clamped to the suction line near the U bend. Is the tube I refer to (with the curly coil on the end) also clamped to the same pipe?

Do you know it's purpose and what it does? The other end attaches to the expansion valve diaphragm chamber so it must have an affect on release of freon into the evap. Seems to make little difference whether the curly coil is hanging free, or in contact with the pipe.

So far I have the following:
      Ambiant 85 degrees, humid.
      Rpm 2000
      Low side 30 psi
      High side 195 psi
      Vent temp 58 degrees
Vent temp while driving 47 degrees.

I feel with some tweaking it can be better.
      Anyone have thoughts?
