One for the FAQ Steve?

A while ago it was suggested that it may be possible to overcome the failure of the 561 ECU to operate the fuel pump relay by replacing the (white) L-Jet relay with the (green) K-Jet relay.

This type of relay senses engine rotation internally instead of using the ECU.
The relay fits the same relay base as the (white) L-Jet one but is wired differently.

Reading my latest edition of the UK. V.O.C Technical Driver magazine I found an article by Peter Suchy on how to do just this.
With the permission of Jack Cluer (the editor) I have reproduced the relevant part below.

"First remove fuse one! Then remove the wires from the fuse/relay unit, with a slim spike pushed down between the housing and connector release the barb then push the connector out, you will need to bend the barb back out so that it locks when you refit the connector.

Then put them back as follows making sure they correspond with the numbers on the relay thick blue/yellow wire
to 87b,pink to87, brown to 30.
Run a (blue/red) wire from terminal 15 to to fuse 13. (an igntion controlled source)
Run a ground (black) wire from the negative bus on the fuse box to 31
Run a (red/white) wire from the single Red/white wire on the tach to terminal 31b.

You will now be left with the black/yellow, red and a looped blue/yellow and brown and white wires.

Insulate these and tie them neatly away in the loom where they can accessed if needed.
Tape the wire from the instrument panel firmly to the loom and make sure that all wires are neatly fitted.
This is to prevent the wires pulling out next time you remove the fuse box!

Now refit the relay making sure all the connectors are firmly pushed into the relay base and start the engine!
The relay is now powered by an ignition pulse from the coil when the engine is turned over."

The above is a bit more work than fitting a new ECU but a hell of a lot cheaper and it retains the original safety feature of cutting off the fuel supply if engine rotation ceases.

Translate to 200 Series Colors?

This looks great, Colin. With your OK, I could translate the wire colors from 700 to 200 (much easier fix on the 200) and post for critique. I'd take the easy route with a cut & paste of your post, plugging in the 240 colors.

One thing though, in the left over wires—

"You will now be left with the black/yellow, red and a looped blue/yellow and brown and white wires."

I could account for—

Black /Yellow (formerly to terminal 86-2)
Red (formerly to 86-1)
Looped Blue/Yellow (formerly to 85 )

—but couldn't find "and brown and white wires" on my '93 930 Volvo diagrams (LH 2.4 and Regina). Would Peter's mods refer to an earlier 700 LH 2.2 circuit perhaps?

Translate to 200 Series Colors?

The problem is that the model on which this was based was not specified in the article,if you want to sort out the wire colors for a different models thats fine.

I have been meaning to work out the modifications required to do this for some time but the only decent diagram I have is for the K-Jet setup I don`t have one for L-jet.

If it is any use, I could try to contact the author of the article to find which model the instructions refer to.

In the meantime if anyone can add anything to the details it can only help us Volvo owners save money which is a good thing.

Translate to 200 Series Colors?

Thanks Colin,

I think the 561 was only used in the LH 2.2 ('85—'88 for 240s), but I'm not sure if ithe 561 can be pegged.to specific years. I'll research it before I do anything.

The only 700 LH 2.2 reference I have is Haynes, which means I'll need a helper to hold a gun to my head. But we'll see...

Translate to 200 Series Colors?

Bruce,

I was under the impression that the 561 ECU came about with the 89 cars and lingered long enough to be found in some of the 90's as well. My (bad) experience with a 561 was in an 89 244.

Translate to 200 Series Colors?

Thanks Randy,

So that means that only the earlier LH 2.4 cars are affected, right?
And NOT the 2.2 as I thought?

I'll try to post the wire swap later today.
