Rim & Tire sizes 120-130

I have followed recent discussions here about widening stock rims. I will be doing this too. Most people seem to want to widen the original 4" rims to 6". I was thinking about going to just 5.5" The reason is that I am planning on using 185/65 or 195/65 tires. According to tire specifications 5.5" rims will handle all the way up to 205/65. I figure slightly narrower rims will reduce the possibility of clearance problems. Is there anything wrong with my thinking?

As Phil says, you shouldn't have any problem with the wheel hitting anything. I knew of one guy who widened his stock rims to 7" wide, and he had them on his 122. BUt i never asked him if he had any rubbing problems, so i don't really know. Between the 5.5 and 6's i'd rather go with the 6 because it will have a better wheel/tire ratio and the tire will be more stable on it, less tire squirm... Better for my preferences. Right now i actually have some 195/65s on 15x5.5s, and it's a little squirmy for my likeing, but i'm sure a lot of that has to do with the tires that are mounted on them. The tires came with the wheels which i got for "free" with my "new" rear end... I'll be upgrading to some aluminum 15x6 wheels from a 700 series turbo when these tires run out. I'd love to get my hands on some 7" wide rims though, preferably 16", but that's a dream... ANYWAY, there's my opinion... Good luck! and let us know what you decide on and how it all turns out! Peace,

If you do the offset right, you won't have any clearance problems with 6" rims. You will get a slight weight savings by only going to 5.5" instead, and they'll happily take 185 or 195 tires, 205 less happily.

Thanks for the info, Phil. On a previous thread you mentioned, to just keep the offset the same as the original, that was for 6" rims. Would your advice be the same for 5.5' rims? If so, the only thing I have to say to the people who are widening is "make them 5.5 inch and keep the offset the same." Is that correct? (I obviously don't have a complete understanding of all this.)

Yes, exactly. Try to have them keep the centerline of the rim the same as it originally was, relative to the plane of the mounting surface where the wheels contact the hubs and drums.
