Timing Belt, Old But Only 10K miles. Replace it? 700

I'm not sure many people still read the 240 posts because of the small number still around, but this also applies to 740s.

I have a nice 1983 245DL. I do not use it much and need to take it on a 500 mile trip (one-way) pulling a trailer in a couple weeks. The car has 136K miles on it. I changed the timing belt 4 years ago (in a Holiday Inn parking lot)and it now has 10K miles on it. It is run at least 4 times a year. I read (or dreamed?) somewhere that age effects timing belts. Should I change the timing belt before the trip because of it's age?

Thanks

I agree with interstition- if there is no evidence of oil leakage, don't worry about it. IF the thing is oil soaked, cracked at all or wearing funny, then I'd replace it. They're cheap enough.

10K and 4 years is nothing. 100K and 14 years, then I'd worry.

I wouldn't change it either. If you are at all worried, loosen the cover and take a peek at it to see how it looks. Unless you have an oil leak (which will soften it and kill it), I bet it will look just like when you put it in.

By the way, I look at both the 200 and 700 boards a lot since I have both cars. I would estimate the 200 board get's 3 times as many posts as this one. I see about as many 240s on the road here as 740s too.

I think that you should be all right, given the age and the mileage, but as the timing belt is so easy to change, I would pop a nice new one on just for peace of mind- Will the Red Block engines be badly damged if the timing belt does go?

I can't comment on the American situation, but in Britain the Volvo 200 series is now a little less commonplace than the 700/900 series, but it is still numerous and has an enthusiastic following amongst Volvo/big car/old car people.

I see at least three 200s on the road every day, ranging in condition from rough but roadworthy to almost mint. I think that the older RWD Volvos will be around well after fossil fuels run out :)
