T5 conversion question 140-160

Just a question for those who have done the swap what speedometer gear you used if you recall. I'm been playing around with speedometer gear calculators and according to the tire height and axle ratio they tell me I need a speedometer gear that was certainly never made. 27 teeth or something like that. Just curious as to which gear would be most accurate.

    T5 conversion question 140-160

I use a white gear, don't know the number of teeth, and it reads about 15% high. it's a code 155 tranny for a 4cyl turbo. .79 top gear.

Let me know how you put the cable together so it fits comfortably and works. I use a mustang cable, modified to accept the volvo bits on the speedo end. The snap-in connection at the tranny end is way too tight against the body. I am still trying to decide whether to pound in the sheet metal or cut in a bypass for it.

      T5 conversion question 140-160

I'm not using stock volvo gauges. I have some Autometer Old Tyme blacks that I am going to use though I perhaps should have gotten the electronic one cause I could enter in the proper information and it would read the correct speed. So I can't help you out on the cable issue. Mine tranny is also a 199 code. Your 155 has a 6 tooth drive gear going to the speedometer gear. You said yours has a white gear in it, thats going to be a 17 tooth gear if it was the cable that came with the transmission, though even if it didn't it should still be a 17. You want to get a 20 tooth gear they are black and are appropriate for the 4.10 rear end and will give you a -1% error instead of the 15% you're getting. The 17 tooth gear was meant for the 3.55 rear end that was in the thunderbirds. I know what I'm going to have to do here I just don't want to. It will recquire me opening up the transmission, pulling the 8 tooth drive gear and replacing it with the 6 tooth so I can also use the 20 tooth speedo gear.

Mine is 18 tooth gear 140-160

Thanks. A little commiseration made me get under it last night and fix things.

I pulled the pickup last night, counted three times. 18 teeth. White. Also managed to pound a little dent into the body and can now snap the cable in and out easily, no interference. I also removed the mounting clip from the 'pickup head' and put it back on the other side, so the electrical connection sticks away from the sheetmetal.

I think you're right. 21 teeth would probably get me close enough. Then again, these readings saved me a speeding ticket. My commute this morning was crawling with cops and pulled-over Mustangs.

          Are you sure =D 140-160

It might be different since it was in a thunderbird but I'm pretty sure ford used the same gears in all the T5 trannys as well as other makers using the same speedo gears as well. An 18 tooth gear should be yellow. 21 tooth (red) should be used if you have a 4.30 rear end and the 20 tooth (black) is perfect for the 4.10 rear. Just depends on if your car had overdrive or not I think. Though this could be affected by your tires. What is your tire size?

I dunno. Next time I take the drive out I'll count them 3x again.
I'm actually more interested in an accurate odometer. I'm calibrating it over a known route (my commute). I think it's a 4.1 rear end; had a m40 originally.

Yeah if it had the m40 then its a 4.10 rear end and you'll want to stick the black 20 tooth gear in there. Your speed rating will be virtually dead on then, not counting for tire difference.
