M40 vrs. M41 Transmission

What is the difference between the M40 & M41 transmission? I had thought that the M41 was used in conjunction with an overdrive. However, I now discover that my transmission is an M40 (Part # 254250 Fabr.# 567230) and I have an overdrive. Comments.....explaination......thanks.

Somebody has put an M40 box (identical to the M41 box) on your M41
tranny. If it has an OD it is by definition an M41 but perhaps in an
overhaul/rebuild scenario it was built up using the box with the M40
tag on it. The biggest difference is the output shaft.

There were also parallel year-to-year differences in both.
