ACCESS TO DASH SPEAKERS '93 940 900

I am trying to mount a vacuum gage next to the drivers-side speaker and can't quite figure how the speaker grill fasteners work. I pried off the trim piece on the near side of the speaker and I found two unusual plastic goodies that look like they might be rotated, but I'm not sure what kind of tool to attack them with. I couldn't see that this was covered in the Haynes manual.

Ordinarily I would just go in, "use a bigger hammer", and chew everything up. But this board is so good I thought I would first give you guys a try.
Any help is appreciated.
Al Stensby

    Hello,
If your talking about the speaker on the door, they side off toward the
door hinge. May I suggest you mount the gauage on the a-pillar with a pod mount from IPD. It is easy and looks great. Joenh

No. I'm talking about the speaker on the dash. For some reason my model has both a speaker on the dash to the left of the instrument cluster as well as one on the front door. I have an old Stewart Warner gage that has a "bullet" mount and it would fit very nicely between the speaker and the top of the instrument panel.

        Dear Papa Al,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. While I have the same speaker set up, I've not needed to remove the speaker cover.

Patience: someone will have done this. You do not want to have to replace a dash, damaged by efforts to remove the speaker. It is hugely costly in parts and labor.

If there's a salvage yard near you that let's buyers remove the parts they want, you could - I'm pretty sure - find a 940 car with an unsaleable dash, and "de-construct" the section near the speaker. You would then learn how the speaker is installed, and so how to remove it.

In such yards, it is deeply appreciated if one does not damage anything that is saleable (i.e., one does not take a piece of molding from a door in perfect condition, without asking permission).

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        spook

The two plastic "goodies" are fasteners that require you pull out the center piece of the nail looking thing and then pull out the whole fastener.

That's the answer I was looking for. My tired old eyes couldn't see what was going on. Those are the kind of fasteners I have on my BMW Radiator.
Now what I am going to do is drill a couple of discrete holes just to the right of the speaker opening and mount my 50 year old "Motor Minder" (Just a Stewart warner gage with a fancy face and a bullet housing.
I have had this gage or a similar vacuum gage on almost all my cars since the fifties. It tells you a lot about your instant mileage.

            Thanks again, Al

To remove the dash spkr. Pry up the trim piece on the edge of the spkr closest to the cabin. This will reveal 2 plastic fasteners. Use a sharp instrument (Xacto knife, precision screwdriver, etc.) to pry up the heads of the fasteners. Once up, lift the closest edge of the spkr and pull it towards you. Disconnect the spkr wires and you will have a great deal of room to play with running the gauge wires/tubes, etc.
