od switch & relay questions 84 240 (autotranny) 200

Well the relay is flaky. tap it and it works.

1) The switch on the shifter. Is it a momentary switch or should it have
an on and off function?
My switch closes when depressed but opens as soon as I release pressure.

2) To lock the OD on can I just jumper relay terminals 87 & 15?

thanks!

The pushbutton switch is a momentary contact type. The performance you described is correct.

The OD relay is notorious for bad (cracked) solder connections, which results in the symptoms you described. Resolder the circuit board in the relay assembly. $0, 15 minutes, no risk, clean 'n easy work. If it solves nothing, you're out nothing.

---Good suggestion! I didnt even think of popping the cover on it.
And your right! No cost so it's worth a shot. The relay doesnt have the
schematic printed on it so I couldnt determine it's function. So the switch
is just a trigger voltage not the on/off coil voltage.

      Thanks for the reply.

"So the switch is just a trigger voltage not the on/off coil voltage."

Right! It triggers a bi-stable circuit in the OD relay assy. The bi-stable circuit drives the actual relay.

        Got pictures if you want.....

Thanks the "trigger pulse" to my brain Don.. I dont use relays with a trigger
input often as most of the ckts. I put together are for event detection i.e.
failsafe ckts so I use alot of time delay relays with a voltage trigger derived
from a controller system.. at any rate.. I touched up the solder on the
board and it works as designed now. :-) saved 50 bucks.. thanks!
