The VX cam is great but I need more... was thinking about purchasing another head and having it completely worked. Bigger cam, injectors, exhaust, etc... also in the mix.
The intake manifold design, including throttle body, on the b230 seems capable of producing the power I want, what about the rest?
Is it possible w/ a stock bottom end?
There is some talk about the 530 head casting being the best, why?
Any thoughts will be appreciated, Jon

Port/polish that beast, new stronger springs, 531 head I believe, V15 cam and gear or perhaps V16 (more aggressive but might not pass emissions) 2.5" mandrel-bent exhaust, new header, lightened flywheel, clean throttle-body, synthetic oil, modded airbox, E-fan, convert to manual tranny, nitrous...shit, I'd say turbo the B230F aka B230F+T or engine swap my friend...how 'bout the twin turbo S80 T6!! It's been done before in a 244...total sickness!!! I might head that route (Turbo) at some point but waiting on the results of the V15.

Yeah, I am all over this project. Want to go the V15/16 route w/ a totally worked head. Was searching TBricks last night and got tons of info on a 200hp n/a motor. Can't believe the Unitek (or is it Enem) cataloge is like $30. Do you have it? A copy would be great, I'll pay any related costs.
I know this hp level can be done... and would prefer to use a head I can get locally... the 531 is found on what car/year/model? Why is it so good?
Bigger valves, valve job, port, polish, gasket match, dual springs, phat cam (don't car about emmisions anymore, I will buy ((forget you read that ;-)) a sticker), header, air box mods, injectors will surely put me close.
Any oxygen sensor, oe ecu, issues at that level?
My only other thing, I want to keep my auto box... where the hell am I going to get a 2500 stall speed (or custom) converter?
Too many questions and answers ?!...
Body work is first. Then, Titans or Volans on spacers. My car is running good, but I think the VX really needs a cam gear and bigger exhaust.
The plus turbo option is interesting, but how much power are guys getting? At what boost? Recoginze that it is a super cost effective project, what about longevity on a n/a set-up? Could you put another head on w/ sodium valves and then do a + turbo set-up?
I can go on and on... be great if we had a live forum.
Peace & Love, Jon

Jon,
I second the live forum idea! I'll check my computer for a .pdf of Unitek's cam catalog...I actually don't have their performance one but I'll send you what I do have. I heard that the 531 head for some reason offers more performance-related gains than the 405?? head in our bricks. Perhaps it already has larger valves, stiffer springs, etc. I thought it was found on some Volvo marine Penta engines, but I'm not sure. I just sent out my head to get a radius valve job, and basically had everything replaced...retainers, guides, silencers, springs from Unitek, all those small part items, etc. Hopefully my Volvo guy will get the head back on the engine by the end of this week as I'm def not advanced enough...changing the oil and brake work is the extent of my knowledge! Probably going to get a cam gear especially with an auto setup...advanced 6 degrees. A larger diameter exhaust will def help the VX breathe better...don't go larger than 2.5" though. The B230F+T is more cost effective versus a port/polish NA engine build-up but at this point I'm not about to get involved with swapping parts. I think the only thing to consider is that the compression factor in our engines is higher than a turbo engine. Turbobricks probably has much more in-depth info compared to my jibberish!
Best,
-Adam

Only if you like driving around at 5,000 RPM. For street motors concentrate on low-end torque. That comes from max displacement, high compression, and good combustion. Horse power is essentially torque times RPM.

That hp is fairly easy to reach. We have had a couple of engines in our rally car. First was a B21 with mildly worked head, K cam and Stahl header. Pair of Weber DCOE 45 carbs was good for about 160hp at 6 grand. Last engine used was a b-23 b/s to 2.6 L with Unitek 531 head and race cam. KG Trimning header, etc. Went to DCOE 50's. Good for 220-240 hp on race fuel and reved to 8K. Of course, neither engine would pass emissions. B21 was very streetable. 2.6L less so. BTW, the 2.6L with all the goodies is for sale on ipd classifieds.

I'm sure it is possible with a stock bottom end... Considering the B23E (? am i thinking of the right engine?) had 140ish stock... Raise the compression a little bit, get a good cam and exhaust headers and cat back(all 2.5" mandrel bent of course), good head work and you should be in buisness. Might need to look into something that will provide the engine with some more fuel, rising rate FPR maybe? I don't know of who has actually done this, but i'm sure it's possible considering we can get this kind of power out of our smaller B20s, and yeah, the dual sidedraft DCOE webers could also help. Maybe you could look into doing a MS conversion possibly? For more tuning? Then with an adjustable cam gear, just take it to a dyno and work your way up little by little. A well matched system of components and sizes of things will make it all work out. As for which components and what sizes, i have no idea... Turbobricks probably has more on it. Good luck, and I would love to hear and follow this if you do decide to go through with it and how the buildup goes and what you learn etc... =D Kickass! Peace,

There was a "featured" n.a. 240 on Turbobricks for a while, made that kind of power as I recall. Used horizontal Weber carbs I think, with cam/head work as you discuss. Might have been stroked. Try a search there...
