Radiator Fan will NOT turn off, even when car has been off for hours 200 1991

240 1991 140k,
Drove 3 mile turned off car; noticed radiator fan was still on 5 hours later, car was in garage. Car has had few issues, Radiator fluid looks and smells fine; replaced one fuse and plugged battery back in and still no luck, fan still blows even when car is off.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

John

Just to add to these suggestions, if disconnecting the sensor doesn`t stop it the relay is stuck closed.

From Colin's tip, it sounds like Volvo changed the fan wiring on later 240's. My 83 manuals show the relay output powers the fan through the temp sensor switch. The relay is "on" whenever the ignition switch is on. So even a stuck relay would not keep the fan running unless the temp sensor was also stuck closed.

That's not good design, and perhaps Volvo got smart and changed things to use the temp sensor to trigger the relay. Then either a stuck sensor OR a stuck relay would give the described problem. It then follows that if disconnecting the sensor doesn't stop the fan it has to be a stuck relay, which is an easy and cheap fix.

Yeah the sender is bad for the fan. It is bad and needs to be replaced.

Disconnect the wiring connector from the temp sensor in the radiator. That should turn the fan off. If so, sensor is stuck (electrically) closed, and needs replacement.
