Top Strut Nut Removal Question Again 200

Got my struts done. Another, possibly lame, question. With the car on the ground, can I remove the 24mm center nut completely and put a better washer under it? Any problem or danger doing this? The washers that were previously installed on the old struts had a center hole a bit too big, and they torqued down a little off center. As an afterthought, I found some washers that would fit perfectly and ride better on the inner race of the bearing. I should have used them the first time, but I just used what the previous guy had used. Thanks for the help.

YES you can remove the Strut Nut while the car is on all fours. DO NOT LIFT CAR. Washers are not needed ..nor did they arrive that way from the factory.

Correct about being able to remove the nut and have the vehicle on the groud.

Regarding the washer, correct that they did not have them at the factory... but you MUST have the washer under the strut mount. The specific "washer" I am talking about is actually the one glued to the top of the strut boot bump stop. The stock bumpstops have the washer on them. If you replace to aftermarket bellows type, then you need to put the same washer there. It fills a space that remains threaded on the strut shaft. Otherwise, the strut shaft will have am approx 2mm play up/down and you would not be able to tighten it.

Happened to me... I forgot to put it, took a while to realize what the problem was. As a quick fix, I actually just added it on top, under the nut. Solved the play on both sides.

      Thanks!

Thanks for the help. My bump stops were in good shape so I reused them. Good tip about not leaving out that washer. I used Sachs Advantage inserts and all the other stuff is stock. I can't wait to get this thing on the road with these changes to the front end: new strut inserts, stock to turbo sway bar, new control arm bushings, and new brake pads. I hope I feel a big difference in handling. A couple weeks ago I did Sachs Advantage shocks and turbo sway bar in back. Next upgrade is Turbo wheels and new tires. Then I'll rest a while. No more money.

          >stock to turbo sway bar

Did you install the turbo sway bar in the rear also? If not you might experience some interesting handling characteristics...

Yes, I installed the rear bar a couple weeks ago, so I should be OK. Good point you make.

I'm pretty sure you can, the weight of the car compresses the spring, but check it out, as you loosen teh nut is the bolt getting shorte, if not you,re good to go.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, but I'm hoping to hear from someone who has done this exact process. Thanks for the reply.
