M46 Basic Maintainence 200

Greetings from the Hudson Valley!

I own a "86" 245 Wagon with a M46 transmission (overdrive button on the shifter knob). Other than changing the transmission fluid, is there a filter or any other type of routine maintence that can / should be done by a shade tree mechanic? Thanks!!

Scott

Just make sure you also remove the little 6-bolt plate/sump cover of the OD unit when draining so you get all the old fluid out, then clean the magnets on the inside of that cover. Get a new sump cover gasket first - IPD have them separately but don't mention this in their catalog. I've switched to Redline's MTL (synthetic) fluid for our M46's and noted an improvement in shift quality and OD operation.

I use the clutch every time I engage or disengage the OD - I figure this reduces the shock loading on those small OD parts.

There is a finer filter underneath one of the plugs with 2 holes. You need to identify which it is from the book, then aquire or make the special tool for undoing it.

Thanks!! How many quarts of Redline MTL does it take to refill if I drain the OD unit as well as you suggested?? FCP Groton sells the stuff at almost $10 per quart. Is it worth it?

You'll need to buy 3 - the M46 takes about 2.4qts. That's with the car tipped up slightly on the left side so it overfills a little...which is good. Go to www.redlineoil.com and check for dealers in your area. Nearby agent charges $9/qt (and no shipping). In my experience the stuff is well worth it. You only need to change it every 50,000+ mi. and it offers superior gear wear protection to the ATF.

You will notice a better shift. Mobil 1 has Syn.ATF or you can use Type F at 2.50. Overfill some.
