Let's get this car started 200 1988

I am having problems starting my car in the mornings and after a long stretch without running. It will turn over but cut out quickly. The more time I start it the longer it idles without cutting out. Even after I get it running it still will hesitate until it reaches normal running temp. Please help me resolve this problem.

PS. This site is a real important resource for our people.
Long live Brickboard!

Sounds like some basic tune up is in order. When was the last time you changed the plugs/wires/dist. rotor/cap/air & fuel filters/cleaned throttle body & idle air valve?

Most starting problems originate at the throttle body. My educated guess says that either your air mass meter is sad, your throttle body is gross, or a combination of both. If the throttle body is way "gooked up" (technical term), as the car warms up, the "goo" softens and kinda "oozes" out of the way and allows the throttle to work properly. Pull the air intake hose off of the throttle housing and peer inside. If it's pretty, silver, and shiny, unplug the air mass meter and see if it will idle for a longer period of time. If it's black and filled with "gook", clean the hell out of it and go from there.

So it will start, but won't continue "nicely", right?

If the spark is good - clean plugs and good rotor and wires, the next thing is fuel.

Check that the in-tank pump is operating. Also check to see if there's any difference if the tank is 2/3 full or under 1/2 full (there's a tiny hose that fails).

If that's ok, you may be troubled by either a failing check valve or a failing fuel pressure regulator (making it run too rich).

Just some ideas.

Good Luck,

Bob

Check if you get good(white) spark from the ignition coil. If spark is not good then

1) Hall effect sensor in distr. is no good

2) Ignition coil is no good

3)Some kind of electical problem...

If spark is good check for fuel
