Towing w/V90 S90-V90

Love my ’98 V90. Want to tow 15 ft fiberglas travel trailer that weights 1,550 pounds, with a 160 pound tongue weight. V90 has “factory” hitch with receiver that measures 1 ¼” across. Don’t know what “class” this hitch falls into, or how much weight it can take/tow. It looks light compared to the Class III I had on the Explorer, but that may have been overkill for this trailer. Volvo dealer and repairer each have no opinion on suitability of factory hitch, and knew nothing about helper springs for rear end. I want to tow this right. Question: Is this hitch OK? Or should I get something bigger? If bigger, then what brand/size would be best for this car/application? Question: Would like to install Volvo helper springs to keep the back end up when trailer is hooked up. What is recommended part number? Thanks for any help.

Here's the link for the IPD tail light converter Keep it in 3rd to lessen the load on engine and trans by locking the torque converter. The nivomats would be perfect for this if you already have them.
    Hope this helps

      Query S90-V90

      1. Do I need the converter if I already have that $70 adapter from Volvo? The dealer said that would be all I'd need to hook the trailer lights to the factory Volvo adapter socket.

      2. How can I tell if I have the Nivomats?

      Thanks for the tow tips!

If you have the basic wiring the terminates in a round plug, and the pigtail that attaches, all you will need is the adapter from Uhaul (or whereever) that permits connections to their configuration.. It 's cheap. The nivmats are a moot point. If you have them, that's great, if not the regualr shocks will do, unless either one is overdue for replacement. Nivos were an option the later models. Yo should be able to check with your VIN number at either a dealer or call the 800 number for Volvo Customer service.

Kerry question...Polls are manufactured (longish, critical rant)

Yes, the middle would be inbetween the two, and is decided by the populace. You are absolutely right on that.

But I guess I don't want to let go of the fact that the center has been moved, through purposeful, ideological work, to the right. Take the more historical view and the middle doesn't just jump out from nowhere. Public opinion, even as measured through simple questions, is largely poked and prodded along the way by sophisticated PR campaigns. In the conservative movement, this PR project is well funded and has established a curriculum of ideological projects over the last 25 or 30 years. The Left has been unsuccessful, for a variety of reasons, in building a clear ideological project.

More media literacy programs would allow people to understand how they are being persuaded, and perhaps facilitate more freedom in formulating opinions that are outside the two tightly bound boxes.

That book CONSTRUCTING PUBLIC OPINION is a very good one. By Justin Lewis, formerly of UMass and now working in the UK.

It's a Class 2 hitch as I recall and will easily tow the boat. Don't buy the hitch from Volvo. Use IPD or go right to Draw-tite which makes the hitch anyway. You'll really appreciate the torque of the I6, but it certainly is not an Explorer, in every way possible...

Most likely that is a class 2 hitch. Should be fine for that boat. I know the s90 is rated to tow up two 3300 lbs. Only other thing you might need is a converter for the stop light since I think the stops and rear running lights are on separate circuits.

You current hitch is fine for that light of a trailer.

I'm not sure you could mount helper springs on these cars but you can fit self-leveling shocks (Nivomats) for the same purpose. Depending upon what else you put in the car, 160lbs of tongue weight shouldn't make the back go down too much.
