need detailed info on how to do a heater core transplant 200

oh man....that's terrible

it looks like the car's were just out of a war zone or something. I think i'll put up with no heat. i was hoping i could just do it with the center console area taken out...but that looks bloody tricky

I bought the car with the Heater core hoses disconnected completely from the firewall nubs. The PO had done this after it had started leaking or something...

but..
good thing i live in san diego with it's 70 degree winters..

:)

I live just to the north in Orange County. I can go without air but I need my heat. You'll eventually do it. it is not as bad as it looks.

Just be real sure it is not just a leak from the hose clamp or, more likely, the heater control valve.

Step one, remove car from around heater core.
Sorry couldn't resist ;-)

Seriously listen to Don and take the dash out first, it will save your back endless pain. It will save time overall when you factor in the not having to do all the work twisted around in wierd positions on your back/side. Instructions for taking the dash out are somewhrere in my site, look in the quick index.
Good luck.

I was able to get it out without taking the dash out. A lot of manuevering. My problem was not carefully marking the wires as I took them apart. The whole thing took me about two days. I bought a heater core from Ebay. Looked new but I thought I'd be careful and have it checked. It leaked. I couldn't imagine going through all that pain and have your replacment leak!! So get your new one checked at a rad shop.

Yes, that feeling reminds me of my chancing upon a bad blower motor out of the box.

My replacement core came with a slip of paper recommending a pressure test using water. All kinds of excuses about shipping and so forth. I use a garden sprayer pump for brake bleeding, cooling system pressure testing, and that day, for putting 15 lbs on the new heater core.

This picture shows the new aftermarket replacement heater core does not split heat to both sides. Knowing the airflow through the heater box is well split between passenger and driver (by the dispersion of the coolant leak!), I was concerned the passenger would get cooked before the driver got heat. But daughter is not complaining.

Art Benstein's blower motor replacement page.

Personally, I think it's a lot easier to remove the dash to do the job.

Absolutely. 200

I did a heater core last winter (91). The first step was removing the dash.

It's the worst job you can do on a 240. By far.

Don't even try it without a copy of the Bantley Bible in hand.

Look up threads on blower fan replacement. The heater core is all that plus another 1 hour - or more.
