brake failure light 200 1984

what situations can causes the brake failure light to illuminate?
is it a pressure differential switch?

my light has recently come and i was trying to diagnose what part(s) to replace

i havent lost any fluid but i have lost a good deal of pedal
the light does not stay constanly on, only when i depress the pedal
when i let off the pedal the light sometimes goes off but not always, it can be turned off if I tap the pedal

i have a slight pull to the left under heavy breaking

my own idea is that it is one of the seals in the master cylinder

any advice would be appreciated

one other thing, if i pump the pedal multiple times and hold the pedal sometimes the light does not come on

does volvo use a dual diagnol set up on their brake lines?

thanks for all of your guys help!

I replaced 3 proportioning valves on 3 240's with your problem (brake warning light on). Fixed the problem in all 3 cases. Dot 3 brake fluid kills proportioning valves, make sure you use dot 4.

Sounds like the proportioning valve, mounted along the fenderwell under the hood. Trace the brake lines from the master cylinder & you'll find it. Look at the top where the switch plugs in and see if it is leaking around there. If so replace it & bleed system. More info under FEATURES-700/900 FAQS.

      Good luck

Just a point of semantics... the proportioning valves (2) are under the car just ahead of the rear axle - used to regulate the proportion of braking force by the rear discs to the front discs.

The pressure differential warning valve is the device that lights the light, located directly below the master cylinder.

Sounds to me like yours (warning valve) is one of the few that is actually doing the job it was intended to do after 20 years service. Your mention that the light sometimes goes out when you let off on the brake is a clue pointing to a real problem with the brake pressure elsewhere in the car. Look for leaks.
