740GLE Heater hose leaking 700

1990 740GLE has a coolant leak in the heater hose fitting. There are two heater hoses coming out from the firewall. The lower hose comes straight out from the firewall and makes an immediate ninety degree turn straight down. Just a few inches from the turn the hose plugs into some sort of fitting. I wasn't able to get a very good view because of the engine parts around and above the fitting, but there's major coolant seepage from the fitting at the end of the hose.

I'm wondering if this is the water valve mentioned in the FAQ or something else. What will it take for me to fix this coolant leak, including which parts and labor procedures?

    I hate to bear bad news, but this 1990 car needs an all-new cooling system: ALL hoses, radiator, water valve, thermostat. They age, become embrittled, crack, and fail.

    You are correct, the lower heater hose connects to the heater control valve. You should replace both heater hoses and the control valve. The lower hater hose comes as one serpantine hose that you cut to install the heater valve. This is not something to delay. Sudden loss of coolant is the fastes way to a leaking head gasket.

    These items are not costly or difficult to replace. The other end of the lower hose beyond the heater valve connects to the block between intake runners 3 and 4. To remove the hoses from the fittings, especially the heater core fittings, cut through them with a sharp razor blade. Cut parallel to the length of the hose. Be cautious and don't cut into the metal fittings. the heater core fittings are brass and can be easily damaged. What ever you do, don't pull and twist on them vigorously. Damage to the heater core may result.

    I would also check the other hoses as well. The fitting on the radiator where the upper hose connects is a very common failure point. This is where the coolant is the hottest. The heat degrades the plastic fitting and causes it to become brittle and they fail suddenly.
